Richard Nixon

On this day in 1974, President Richard Nixon announced his resignation from the office of the President in a nationwide television address. In doing so, he became the first president in American history to resign the office.

Born in Yorba Linda, California on January 9, 1913, Nixon’s early life was marked by hardship. He later quoted a saying of Eisenhower to describe his childhood, “We were poor, but the glory of it was we didn’t know it.” He entered politics as a young man and would go on to serve as Vice President under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. After failing to win the presidential election in 1960, narrowly losing to John F. Kennedy, Nixon ran again in 1968 and was successfully elected into office.

The last years of Nixon’s second term were marred by the Watergate scandal. Bowing to public and political pressure, Nixon resigned from office and Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38th President of the United States.
