Profile of the Day: Robert Louis Stevenson

On November 13, 1850, Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Stevenson is perhaps best known for his novels Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A literary celebrity during his lifetime, Stevenson still ranks as one of the most translated authors in the world.

On December 3, 1894, Stevenson died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage in his home in Samoa at the age of 44. He was buried on the summit of Mount Vaea. The following epitaph is inscribed on his tomb:

Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will

This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.
