Today we remember Roy Orbison, who died on this day in 1988.

Orbison was born on April 23, 1936 in Vernon, Texas to a working class family. He showed an interest in music at an early age when his father gave him a guitar for his 6th birthday. By the age of 8, Orbison began singing on a local radio show.

Known for his trademark glasses and distinctive voice, Orbison is often considered one of the most influential musicians in rock and roll history. He recorded several top hits including “Only the Lonely,” “Oh, Pretty Woman,” and “Crying.”

Orbison died of a heart attack on December 6, 1988 at the age of 52.
