Theodore Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Theodor Robert Geisel and Henrietta Seuss. His father was a successful brewmaster before the family brewery was closed when Prohibition took effect. He was later appointed as superintendent of Springfield’s public parks system by the mayor.

Geisel published his first children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, in 1937 under the pen name Dr. Seuss. The book was rejected 27 times before it was finally published. He would go on to publish over 60 children’s books.

To this day, his playful rhymes and unique stories continue to capture the imaginations of young readers. His birthday is also celebrated as Read Across America Day to encourage and motivate children to read.
