Ulysses S. Grant

On April 12, 1861, the American Civil War began when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter. For four years, the war divided the nation. Under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, the Union armies defeated the Confederate armies of the South and brought an end to the war. After the Civil War, Grant would serve two consecutive terms as the 18th President of the United States.
