On March 14, 1820, Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy, was born in Torino, Italy. King of Sardinia from 1849 to 1861, he became the first king of a united Italy since the 6th century and held the title until his death in 1878. The people gave him the epithet Padre della Patria, “Father of the Fatherland.”
