After visiting various amusement parks with his daughters, Disney was inspired to build his own theme park where adults and children could enjoy rides and attractions together. The construction of Disneyland began on July 16, 1954 and would cost $17 million to complete. One year later on July 17, 1955, the park opened to much fanfare. Over 28,000 people attended the opening day event, including invited guests and the media, which aired the opening day celebration on television.

Although the park did not officially open to the public until the following day, Disneyland celebrates July 17 as its official birthday. Since opening its doors, Disneyland has welcomed over 650 million guests from all over the world.
