Her ZIM DN 15/196 gives her birthplace as Queenstown, Cape Colny (added top her profile)

Hi Sharon, I have even more of a dilemma with my great grandmother. Her Zim DN says that she was born in South Africa but the birth certificate of her son says she was born in England! I suspect that the latter (when she was alive and able to offer the information) may be more accurate but who knows! At least we can be fairly certain that Sarah Hulley was born in South Africa, if not the exact place.

Shew, that's confusing. I agree that I'd go with what we know she had input on.

Birth and baptism one year apart = plenty of time for the family to have moved from Queenstown to Somerset East?

Actually 4 Dec 1855 to 4 Feb 1856 so only two months apart. I see two older siblings and one younger sibling were baptised in Bathurst and the four youngest siblings were all baptised in Queenstown.

Hmm, Thank you for all the input guys: so at the moment, I'm leaning towards showing birth & baptism both in Somerset East, and assuming they moved to Queenstown afterwards.
What do people think of that?

Re my previous comment about birth and baptism being one year apart - here's a classic example of the confusion caused when not using actual months in the dates! I had read the dates as 12 April 1855 and 2 April 1856!!

Two months is still enough time for the child to have been born in Queenstown and baptised in Somerset East, without the need for the family to have undergone any major changes of abode - perhaps they visited family for Christmas?
Was there any change in their place of abode over this period? Sounds like father, Francis was a fairly adventurous person in his youth (fighting Kaffir War at age 15).

Thanks Evan, you know what we know - so it's a bit stuck at this point :-)

I'm still thinking that the greater likelihood is that the Christening is where the birth took place, given that the two older siblings aren't baptised in Queenstown; but your version is enough of a possibility, that perhaps the best thing is to make the birth Eastern Cape, and leave out the town altogether.
