or the same woman as “ellis” or “alice”… or a prior generation such as a great uncle or a grandfather of Matthew who was an emigrant Matthew Wildman ?
Remember: Matthew is said to have been born in Tatham parish in 1620.

This Christopher Thornton’s marriage in 1574 would make him a candidate father for Ellen who is said to have been married in 1610. If Ellen was c.20 years old in 1610, then she would have been born c. 1690…. SO: either Chritopher (above) or Richard, p. 17 might be her father…

It is notable to see another connection between the Blands and the WIldmans:

• The Wildmans and the Blands have a background:
a marriage is recorded in Tatham Parish
23 Aug 1653 Giles Bland & Agnes Wildman

Perhaps then, Agnes is Matthew's sister...

Father: Matthew Wildman b. about 1620 in Tatham Parish, Lancashire, England d. 1670 in Lancashire, England
Mother: Elizabeth b. about 1620 in Tatham Parish, Lancashire, England d. 5 Nov 1676 in Lancaster Castle jail, Lancashire

=Martin and Ann were married at the Home of George Bland=

, Nether Bentham, Yorkshire, England. They '''emigrated with their six children on 2 Feb 1690''' and settled in Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

• certificate of membership from the monthly meeting at Settle, Yorkshire, England (not far from Tatham parish, Lancashire)

Ralph’s will was proved on the same day as his burial. The will dated 1732 does not mention a wife as she was already deceased (1730). There are no nominated relations mentioned in the will, e.g. son, brother etc. There are no apparent family links to those individuals who are named in the will. This supports the view that Ralph and Agnes did not have children.

Ralph was married in 1692 and if this took place at a usual age then he would have been born about 1670. There are no baptisms of a Ralph in Ingleton, Thornton in Lonsdale or Bentham at this time. Leeming activity in the registers of any of the northern parishes is almost non existent. It is likely that he was not born in Ingleton but had relocated there sometime before his marriage. [Bentley, John – History of Ingleton provides much information about early Ingleton families; Leeming is not mentioned until the nineteenth century].

Ingleton has its own registers; surviving registers commence in 1607 but Leeming activity does not begin until 1720 significantly later than Ralph would have been born. Ingleton is within the parish of Bentham and where baptismal registers do not survive before 1673; Leeming activity commences in 1699.

Thornton in Lonsdale registers (Thornton is very close to Ingleton) survive from 1576; there is limited early Leeming activity but no baptism for a Ralph

As Ralph and Agnes were married in 1692 and Agnes did not die until 1730, this Ralph cannot lawfully have been involved in any other of the identified marriages.
Marriage at Tatham January 19 1706 – Ralph Leeming/Gennet Wildman

1706 Jan 19 Ralph Leeming Gennet Wildman

The parish register records the marriage as between Ralph Leeming and Gennet Wildman. There is a corresponding Marriage Bond also dated Jan 19 but this is for a marriage of Ralph Leeming of Bentham and Jennet Bland.

1706 Jan 19
Ralph Leeming p Bentham
Jennet Bland
Edmund Leeming p Tatham [Bondsman]
Francis Wildman, John Waller [Witnesses]

Ignoring a “Clerical” error we can presume that Gennet Wildman and Jennet Bland are the same person.

As Ralph was from Bentham we could conclude, I now think incorrectly, that the following children baptised at Bentham were the children of Ralph and Gennet (The register shows the mother’s name for all later entries and not just for the children of Ralph). We can further assume that these are all children of the same parents. However Jane is not Jennet (the archaic form of Janet), but confusion could have arisen if the mother was known as Jenny, Janie or Jen.

1707 Nov 22 Robertus filius Randulphi Leemin
1709 May 08 Johannes filiuds Radulphi Leemin
1713 Apr 12 Maria filia Ralph Leeminge
1715 Apr 17 Thomas filius Radulphi Leemin
1717 May 12 Elizabetha filia Radulphi Leemin
1719 Apr 16 Ann filia Ralph Leemin [ET Milner]
1720 Jul 16 Ralph s Ralph Leeming
1724 Jul 26 Edmund s Ralph and Jane Leeming
1726 Nov 27 Joseph s Ralph and Jane Leeming

It is almost certain that this Ralph and Gennet are buried at Melling.

1728 Jan 02 Radulphus Leemen de Hornby sepult secundo die January
1728 Jan 19 Jenetta Leemen vid: de Hornby sepult decimo nono Janr’ij

The baptisms stop shortly before the burials.

Typically at the time of their marriage individuals would have been aged 20-25 years. Ralph and Gennet would thus have been born around 1680 and would only have been aged 48 when they died – low but not unusually so. There is no obvious baptism of a Gennet Wildman 1680 ± 10 years. There is a 1674 baptism at Clapham. Even if we could find a Gennet Wildman it wouldn’t explain why the the surname Bland was used on the marriage bond.

There is another possibility which I now consider much more likely.

At Tatham on 10th February 1687 Jennet Bland married Robert Wildman, thus becoming Jennet Wildman. For this Jennet to have been able to (legally) marry Ralph in 1706 she would need to be a widow i.e. Robert Wildman must have died between 1687 and 1706. There are no such deaths recorded at Caton, Claughton, Hornby, Gressingham or Tatham. However, at Bentham there is a suitable burial,

1690 Nov 21 Robert Wildman de Robert Hall

There are two baptisms at Bentham which immediately follow the marriage and pre-date the burial,

1688 Dec 08 Agnes filia Roberti Wildman
1689 Mar 09 Margareta filia Roberti Wildman de Robert Hall

There are no subsequent children of Robert Wildman recorded in the Bentham Registers. Note: Robert Hall is in the parish of Tatham but is less than half a mile from Bentham parish church and almost 3 miles from Tatham church; Bentham was simply more convenient.

There is an Administration Bond and a Curation Bond relating to the late Robert Wildman of Robert Hall both are dated 1690 Nov 27. In them Jennet Wildman is bound (along with Thomas Talbot and Richard Robinson). The children named in the Curation Bond are Agnes and Margaret Wildman, daughters of the late Robert Wildman. So far, so good.

Looking further (but in the expected parish), there was a baptism at Tatham 07 Jan 1666 Jennet Bland d of Giles Bland. There was also a marriage at Tatham 23 Aug 1653 Giles Bland and Agnes Wildman. Agnes was the name chosen for first child of Jennet & Robert. Regrettably there is no similar simple link for Margaret to be the name of Robert Wildman’s mother.

This scenario solves the Wildman/Bland issue: Jennet was Wildman nee Bland. It fits as regards Jennet’s marriage to Ralph taking place in Tatham – it was her parish of birth and where she lived even though the family had used Bentham church. It is also credible regarding the ages at death of Ralph and Jennet Leeming (in 1728 Jennet would be aged about 62).

The bondsman on the marriage bond is an Edmund Leeming of Tatham. It is difficult to identify Edmund’s relationship (if any) to Ralph.

More on Bland name:

Chapter IV of Besse (on Yorkshire) , p. 95 reads:

John Priestly, George Bland, and John Warren, were beaten on the Highway, or in the Street. Tristram Key was beaten by an angry Justice with a Cane in the Street: Also Henry Thompson, of Weston, having reproved the Priest of that Parish for lying, was beaten by him in the open Street.

Reading the list : http://www.tathamhistory.org.uk/resources/parishregister/t-mar1557_...
we see that Thorntons, Tathams, and Wildman families have multiple combinations in marriage. This will complicate being able to determine precise relationships as it's not immediately apparent the children they had.

go to: Yorkshire, England: Church of England Parish Records
Ingleton and Chapel-Le-Dale churches 1607-1812 Baptisms, 1607-1812; in the baptisms on page 11, as suggested by the index, there is a father MARTIN WILDMAN who christened a son GEORGE on 1 AUGUST, 1624:
" George filius Martin Wildman de Bentham "
This is lucky find for the Baptism took place in Ingleton parish about 3 miles from Bentham. And Bentham is 5 miles distant from Lowgill (Tatham Parish) in the opposite direction.
