The profile notes (2016) say Joseph of Providence... but is that correct?
a possible match is: Joseph Williams
but, on this match, there is no mention of a daughter named Joanna
"
Son of Rev. Roger Williams, Founder of Rhode Island and Mary Williams (Barnard)

Husband of Lydia Williams (Olney)

Father of Joseph Williams; Thomas Williams; Lydia Dyer (Williams); Joseph Williams, Jr.; Mary Whipple (Williams); James Williams; Providence Williams and Living Williams
"

A Rev. Roger WIlliams genealogy includes a list of the the children of his son Joseph:

Children of Joseph2 Williams and Lydia Olney were as follows:

Joseph3 Williams was born 26 Sep 1670.

Thomas Williams, b. 16 Feb 1671/72 at Providence, RI; m. Mary Blackmar; m. Hannah Sprague.

Joseph Williams, b. 10 Nov 1673 at Providence, RI; m. Lydia Hearnden.

Mary Williams, b. Jun 1676; m. Obediah Brown(e).

James Williams, b. 24 Sep 1680 at Providence, RI; m. Elizabeth Blackmar.

Lydia Williams was born 26 Apr 1683; she died 1717.

If Joanna is a missing daughter and was born in 1682 she would have to have been conceived after october 1680 and born before (9+ months before the birth of Lydia) August 1682. It would be most likely the first months of 1682...

Instead of "of" Rhode Island... a secondary source reads "Dr. Ross married, 1st, Joanna Williams, said to have been of Rhode Island."

A geni manager alerted me to a tree on ancestry:
http://person.ancestry.com/tree/46986586/person/6662955363/facts

It lists Joanna as the daughter of Joseph WIlliam and Lydia Olney and as the wife of Rev. George Aeneas Ross. The problem is that there is no sourcing...

Can any of you help?

I've now looked at the profile of (prospective mother Lydia Olney)...here on GENI. There is no mention of Joanna.

Additionally, Here is a tree that shows different parents for Joanna:
http://person.ancestry.com/tree/86213432/person/34532173704/facts

These parent are:
John Williams
1644–1687
BIRTH 18 AUG 1644 • Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States
DEATH 1687 • Newport, Newport, Rhode Island, United States
&
Anna Alcock
1650–1718
BIRTH 26 MAY 1650 • Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA
DEATH 12 DEC 1718 • Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA

Conclusion: More study needed.

Here's a determination/decision ... to go with John WIlliams and Anna Alcock as parents:

===parents===

She ^ Joanna ^ was born about c1682. Her parents have often said to have been Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Williams of Rhode Island.
~• but this is incorrect. No sourced genealogy of the famed Rev. William of Providence Plantation and his son Joseph mention a Joanna Williams. Please do change parentage here.

This is it, from me for now. ~Mike vB, curator.

My research leans toward Joanna Williams being "Joanna Willems Neering", one of 4 daughters of John Williams, aka Jan Willems Neering, of New Castle, a prosperous merchant. His wife was Anna Catherine de Meyer.

I believe - because I can't ever find anything to prove it - that Joanna was NOT born in Rhode Island and that it is an error of long-standing. Wishful thinking that she was a granddaughter of RI founder, Roger Williams. There is no child named Joanna of Lydia Olney and Joseph Williams and it is very unlikely that the Ross family wouldn't have proudly proclaimed her Williams/RI heritage.

A very interesting clue, but not proof, is that a portrait of Joanna W. Neering brother, Jacobus Willems Neering, was passed through the Ross/Read families - see this link:
https://nc-chap.org/portraits/details.php?wname=jacobus_williams

The notes with this link say:
This portrait descended through the Ross and Read families to the present owner. It is believed to be that of Jacobus Williams, brother of Joanna Williams, first wife of Rev. George Ross.

The identity of the sitter is more than a little murky, since there is another upper-class brother-sister pair with similar names that lived in New Castle during this period: Jacobus Williams Neering (or Nerring) and Joanna (or Johanna) Williams Neering. It is not obvious whether they are the same or not.

Jacobus and Johanna Williams Neering [Nerring] were children of John Williams Neering according to the Calendar of Wills, New Castle County, 1682-1800.

John Williams Nerring. [Neering?] Merchant. N. C. [d] June 4, 1698. Aug. 27,
1700. Misc. 1, 366. Son, Jacobus Williams Nerring; four
daughters, Sarah, Lydia, Elizabeth and Joanna Williams Nerring.
Wife deceased. Adm. daughters, Sarah and Lydia; Mr. Richard
Halliwell; Dr. Samuel Staats, Capt. Johannes Kip.
John was the second wealthiest person in the New Castle Constabulary according to the tax assessments from 1683.

According to the NY Genealogical and Biographical Record, Jan Willemse Neering of New Castle married Ann the daughter of the former mayor of New York. He was a member of Penn's provincial council. He was also known as John Williams.

"Jacobus William Neering" m Mary Garland in 1715 according to the Immanuel's Vital Records. But it provides no details of children or death for either them or Joanna Ross. Johanna's [Joanna] marker inside the church has the inscription: "Memor virtutum Johannae conjugis Honesto genere natae hoc sepulcri Monumentum maritus Georgius Ross. Evangelii praeco, extruendum curavit. Anno acquievit illa aetatis trigesimo Septimo. 29 September 1726." "Dixit ei Jesus quisquis vivit et credit in me non morietur in eternum." "Calcanda semel via lethi."

Joanna is an unresolved discrepancy. The "Rossiana" book of Read/Ross genealogy says of the wife of George Ross. "Joanna Williams b. 1680 Rhode Island d. 29 Sep 1726 Buried: Immanuel Church, New Castle, DE".

If you find any proof of Joanna's lineage, I'd love to know. I'm the 6th Great Granddaughter of George Aeneas Ross and Joanna Williams.
