Do we have any sources / evidence for the relationship between @JacobLakens and 'Maaij' Claesje van Angola @'Maaij' Claesje van Angola?
What are we relying on to assert Claesje is the mother of Annette? At p.71 of http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/RemarkableWriting/UL20ExtremestEnd.pdf we are give the following list, with likely descendents' lines, but many of the names are prefaced with a question mark:
[?] halfslag Maria [Maria Matthyssen Eli] van de Caep born 1663 - Rijkman van Wey
descendants
[?] halfslag Willem baptized 25 October 1665 [mother: Vlossijk [Claesje?]]
halfslag Elisabeth [Lijs Blom?] van de Caep baptized 14 August 1667
[?] halfslag Anna (Annetje) Lakens: van de Caep Company born c. 1669; bejaarde baptized 8
December 1686
halfslag Sara [Leenderts: / Jans: / van Gijselen] van de Caep baptized 5 July 1671 - Oelofse
descendants
heelslag Christina (Christijn) [Pieters:] van de Caep (born c. 1673);baptized as
bejaarde 4 August 1686 – Stols descendants
halfslag Johanna (Jannetje) [Willems: / van Wijk] van de Caep baptized 27 October 1675 -
Hartog, Piek, Wedekind, Coos, Duuring descendants halfslag Magdalena [Smit] van de Caep 15 August 1677
The question mark indicates that Maria, Willem, Lijs Blom, Annetje Lakens, Sara van Gijselen etc may POSSIBLY have been Claesje's children - but that the relationship is not confirmed by clear records and therefore not certain.
Mansell Upham has proposed these mother/child relationships based on an expert analysis of slave transactions, names and family associations indicated by witnesses at baptisms etc.
In a few lucky instances, mtDNA is able to verify the proposed relationships.
A descendant of Christijn Pietersz has just been tested, so in a few weeks we will be able to see if she is a match to the descendant of Jannetje van Wijk. You'll be able to see the results posted on this discussion thread: https://www.geni.com/discussions/155279?msg=1211171

Yes, Ian, awaiting that DNA result with interest. That might confirm a maternal link, but for paternity we rely on Mansell Upham's analysis of records? Am I correct that this proceeds by deduction e.g. attaching the "van Wijk" paternity retroactively to "Johanna's" baptism because long after the baptism a "Jannetje van Wijk" features in records without any other different baptismal record, and therefore must have had a van Wijk father, of which Willem is the most logical candidate within the limited population?
