We have family members who were deported to Siberia during and after the II World War. Is there somewhere we could access information regarding their burial - cemetery location?

Yes there is a place you could refer to.
Lithuanian special archive - http://www.archyvai.lt/en/news.html
This is for the people who got deported.
Regards the deaths - no idea whereabout in Russia you can get that.

This will be a labour of love. Do you know about when they were deported or where they may have been in imprisoned? Germans liked to keep good records of their prisoners. Communists not so much. Deported people were herded into railroad freight cars on moments notice. Jammed up like the worst rush hour subway ride you ever experienced and then some more... but they were there for days / weeks until they died or arrived in Siberia where more died.

Some nationalities tried to assemble records of those deported and to build memorials. Some of which have now found their way into books and on to the internet. To learn more about this try searching for terms like "sibiriniai tremimai" or English terms like "soviet deportations from Lithuania" or "Lithuanian deportations". There is quite a bit of material. Newspapers of the day in some places were known to try and publish daily lists of those deported as best they could.

You will find useful background like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_deportations_from_Lithuania

It may be helpful to begin by learning about the "GULAG" prison system. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulag

Lithuanian organizations commemorating "Freedom fighters - Partizanai" might be of interest. They usually have lots of material. Here is one with a story about Siberia. http://www.partizanai.org/index.php/lietuviai-sibire and another with a collection of books www.llks.lt . I found that books are great sources to learn more about a particular place such as say the story about Norilsko Vyčiai - the uprising of prisoners in Norilsk as many names are mentioned. Here is are examples of two books I found on deportation topic. As luck would have it I found my uncle's name in one. The english part of this starts on pdf pg 323 book 326. http://llks.lt/knygos/E_Buroko%20knygos/PutemePriesVeja4.pdf and another https://www.worldcat.org/title/norilsko-vyciai/oclc/977301342

When I come up with more ideas I will post another note. One thing to consider is that while finding their burial may be difficult... learning about what they went through in Siberia - the horrors of Communism and sharing that with your children and friends may be more worthwhile.

Hello Angele,

I'm not sure if it is still what you are looking for, but I thought I will pop a message just in case :)
There is a website, but it's only in Lithuanian where you could also look for places in Siberia where your relatives could be buried - https://www.lietuviaisibire.lt/lt/tremties-vietos.

Does one have to join the projects in some way to add people? I find them a bit of a puzzle sometimes. Some I can never find from a profile screen while others I can.
