My ancestor John Webb was born on 27 May 1798 in Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire, Eng. He died on 27 Nov 1873 in Sorell, Tasmania, Australia. He married Eliza Alomes on 10 Mar 1829 in Sorell, , Tasmania, Australia, daughter of Robert Alomes and Elizabeth Billett. She was born on 03 Mar 1812 in Sorell Tasmania. She died on 18 Mar 1902 in Runnymede, Tas.

John Webb was tried on the 21 Jul 1819 at Oxford in England. Transported on the 'Guilford' which departed from Portsmouth,England on the 14 May 1820 and arrived at Hobart Town on the 28 Oct 1820. Transported for 14 year's,aged 21 year's old.John Webb is described as being 5'8" tall,brown hair,grey eyes and no marks or scars on his body.

He worked for a Mr Petchey,who was a farmer,as a servant. In 1822 Petchey complained to the authorities that Webb had stolen three bushels of wheat. The charge could not be proved so John still had his freedom. Eighteen months later Petchey again complained of improper conduct and Webb was sentenced to 50 lashes. Two year's later John Webb was again sentenced to another 50 lashes for escaping from custody,this time he was sent to Maria Island. Four months later while being at the island,he was accused of being a bushranger. Later on he escaped from Maria Island but was recaptured by two men and sentenced to another 50 lashes and was sent then to Macquarie Island.His convict records are incomplete and no pardon's are listed,just a referal to the Free Certificate Office.

In the 1842 Census,John was listed as a farmer at Pittwater,Sorell. He was married and had 5 children: 2 Males & 3 Females. They lived in a house owned by Sarah Wood.

JOHN WEBB
Convict Number 81223
Ship Name “Katherine Stewart Forbes”
Departure Port London
Conduct Record Con 31/46
Description List Con 18/10
John Webb arrived in Van Diemen’s Land per ship “Katherine Stewart Forbes” 16 July 1832, having been convicted at Warwick 3 August 1831 of housebreaking and sentenced to transportation for life. He received a ticket of leave 1 Jan 1840 and a conditional pardon 12 May 1846 (1)
In February 1876 a free pardon for John Webb was received from the Secretary of State for the Home Department after one unsuccessful application. The Colonial Secretary ( Tasmania ) advising the Governor to re submit the application stated that John Webb had arrived in 1832 when aged 20. For the last 30 years, he added “Mr Webb has held his conditional pardon free from any stain upon his character, he has brought up and educated a large family in a creditable manner, and several of his children are married to highly respectable citizens, while he himself is proprietor of one of the largest hotels in the city”. (2)
John Webb’s description when he arrived in 1832 stated that he was a cook and house servant aged 20, height 5 ft 5 ½ inches with reddish brown hair and hazel eyes (3)
He applied for permission to marry Clarissa Godson, free in May 1835 (4) and they were married in St. David’s Church by banns 8 June 1835, witnesses being Robert Bell and William Holdship.
Children (all WEBB)
Godson William Chiddery, 20 Dec 1835 Trinity Church Hobart
Bryant born 28 Feb 1839 Trinity Church
Edwin 28 May 1841 Trinity Church
Mary 30 Nov 1843 Trinity Church
Alfred 9 June 1846 St. David’s Church Hobart
Clarissa’s death was registered at St. David’s Church Hobart Tasmania 6 April 1848 aged 38
John Webb remarried 5 July 1848 at Bethseda Chapel Hobart Town his second wife being Elizabeth Ballantyne of Hobart Town , widow. She was probably the widow of Robert Ballantyne who died 20 Feb 1844 and was buried in the Scotch cemetery
Children born were
Rosina Ballantyne 29 June 1849
Emily Alice
Elizabeth must have died shortly after the birth of Emily because John Webb remarried 4 March 1853 Emma Garth (Minor) in the Congregational Church Hobart (5)
John Webb died on 8 Jan 1881 at his residence Webbs’s Hotel Murray Street Hobart in his 67th year. (6) His obituary said that he had been born at Leamington (which is in Warwickshire) 29 May 1814 and had come to Tasmania at an early age. He was a skilled cook and confectioner who had no equal.
He had built the ‘stately pile which now bears his name and is the locale of the principal balls in the city. Possessed of a rough exterior, he nevertherless was very charitable to poor people. He left a widow and several adult children.

The John Webb who some people have mistakenly put down as being married too Eliza Alomes is, I believe the person whose information is above who arrived on the Katherine Forbes in 1832 and when he arrived he stated he was a cook, this plus the fact that John Webb and Eliza Alomes first child was born in 1830, two years before the John Webb who married Emma Garth and Eliza Garth would suggest that the two John Webb's were in fact two separate people

Im sure there will be disagreements over my theory but if you sit down and analyse the dates for all the marriages and births and places these events took place my theory makes sense but ill leave it open for discussion ..thanks for reading :)

Sorry Peter, I was busy yesterday and today - I will have a look at the profiles

Hi,
It does look like a lot of researchers have confused the two men.

John Webb [Convict "Katherine Stewart Forbes" 1832]

John Webb [Convict "Guildford" 1820]

The hard part will now be making sure we have the correct John attached to the correct wive/s.

I will update the overview with links to everything I can find and attach any source documents to the profiles.
If you have any source documentation - please add it to the profiles.

Leanne

In order to clear up who married who, we are going to have to go back to basics and prove the parentage of each of the children. To facilitate this I have created 2 more John WEBB's - one being the husband of Emma GARTH and the other the husband of Elizabeth GARTH.
I have attached records to the profiles as I locate them.

It would be really great if anyone with sources could attach a copy to the profile so that we can sort out which man belongs with which wives.

I found a newspaper article describing Emma Louise (who married Bumpus) as the 5th daughter of John WEBB

I found birth records for Alfred WEBB 9/6/1846 and his parents are registered as John WEBB and Jane U

Duncan Hodder, some of these profiles run into your research.
If you have any birth, death or marriage records that prove any of the relationships could you please add them in and let us know.

Have added citations for John Webb; convict; Guilford
John Webb/Eliza Alomes Marriage, (note that Jacob & Catherine Bellett wete witnesses), and
Amelia Mary Bellette, showing John & Eliza as parents.

It would appear that a connection between John Webb's marriage, and John Webb, convict is needed to make the citations irrefutable

Sorry - where have you added the citations?

Found Amelia's birth record - https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000081002532888&

and attached Eliza ALOMES and John WEBB to it.

I think we are all okay with
* John WEBB from "Guildford" marrying Eliza ALOMES
* John WEBB from "Katherine Stewart Forbes" marrying Clarissa GODSON

Queries currently are
* Which John WEBB married Emma GARTH in 1853
* Which John WEBB married Elizabeth GARTH in 1848
* Who are the parents of Esther Jane WEBB born 1856 who married Louis Younger PRIOR

And to clear up any confusion birth records for these that show their parents would be great
* 1828 Emma Amelia WEBB
* 1829 James WEBB
* 1830 Emmaline WEBB
* 1830 Susannah WEBB
* 1832 John WEBB
* 1833 Elizabeth Ann WEBB (birth record I found does not detail parents)
* 1839 Eliza WEBB
* 1839 Bryant WEBB (birth record I found does not detail parents)
* 1841 Edwin WEBB (birth record I found does not detail parents)
* 1843 Mary WEBB (birth record I found does not detail parents)
* 1848 Frederick Edward WEBB
* 1852 Emily Alice/Ellice WEBB
* 1855 Emma Louisa WEBB (birth record I found does not detail parents) on her marriage she is described as 5th daughter of John WEBB
* ? Mary WEBB

I can't locate a birth record for Emily Alice Butler for 1852 however I have found her marriage record to George Ernest Butler in 1851 where Rosina Ballantyne Wright is a witness to the wedding.

This would lend evidence towards her being the daughter of Elizabeth Ballantyne - Webb

LATEST UPDATE
Confusion; confusion!!, however..................
John William Webb
Appears to have been born 27 May 1798 in Little Tew, Oxfordshire (srtill to find a citation)
Married Elizabeth Garth; varying dates; 21 Jan 1830; 1847 or 5 Jul 1848
(An Elizabeth Garth was born in Hobart 1820, which would suggest an 1840's marriage; no citation of Elizabeth Garth arriving from the UK in the early 1800's is found as yet
The birth od Rosina Webb to John Webb & Elizabeth Garth in 1849 suggests marriage date of 1847 or 1848)
John William Webb died Sorell, 27 Nov. 1873

John Webb:
Born Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire, 27 Mar 1798 (citation to the effect added to his record)
Married Eliza Alomes 10 Mar 1829 (previous citation)
John dies at Sorell 27 Nov. 1873 (citation added)
Death certificate indicated John as a farmer. I have added further information to John's file that indicated he had a farm adjacent to Jacob Bellett, who was a witness to John's wedding to Eliza Alomes. Jacob Bellett appears to have been Eliza's grandfather

Suggest we delete the 'William' in John Webb's record

8/7/2018 at 1:26 AM

PS/

John Webb born Aston Rowant is consistent with his parents shown in his tree; ie William Webb & Elizabeth Herridge

Don't Delete anything until we work them all out.

There are currently 4 John WEBBs

John WEBB Convict "Guildford"
- born 1798
- arrived in Australia 1820
- married Eliza ALOMES on 10/3/1829
children
- James 7/10/1829
- twins Susannah and Emmaline 8/11/1830
- John 11/1/1832
- Elizabeth Ann 8/10/1833
- Eliza 8/12/1839
- twins unnamed daughter (assume stillborn) and Amelia Maria born 1850

John WEBB convict "Katherine Stewart Forbes"
- unknown birth date
- arrived Australia 1832
- married Clarissa GODSON on 8/6/1835
children
- Godson William Chiddey 18/2/1839
- Edwin 28/5/1841
- Mary 30/11/1843
- Walter 19/1/1848
Wife Clarissa died 3/4/1848

John WEBB
- born 1808
- married Elizabeth BALLANTYNE nee GARTH on 5/7/1848 at Hobart
children
- Rosina Ballantyne WEBB 29/5/1849
- Emily Alice WEBB 1852 (based on Rosina being present at her wedding)
Wife Elizabeth died 13/1/1853

John WEBB
- unknown birth date
- married Emma GARTH
children
- Elizabeth 23/3/1854
- Emma Louisa 4/9/1855
- Ethel May 5/5/1868

The 3rd and 4th John's are possibly the same person

John WEBB convict "Guildford" appears to have only married once - to Eliza ALOMES. Eliza's death notice says she is the widow of the late John WEBB - this would be unlikely if they divorced and he remarried.

There is a suggestion that John WEBB convict "Katherine Stewart Forbes" married 3 times
1) Clarissa GODSON in 1835 - she died 1848
2) Elizabeth BALLANTYNE nee GARTH in 1848 - she died in 1853
3) Emma GARTH in 1853
and that this John died in 1881

On the "For" side - the timeline for the deaths of the wives ties neatly together with the marriage date occurring a few months after the death of the previous

On the "Against" side - I have found the newspaper article for John WEBB born 29/5/1814 died 8/1/1881 leaves a widow and several adult children. If this is the same person he would have been the father of 9 adult children not several (but perhaps that refers to just the children to Emma). Also the husband of Elizabeth BALLANTYNE nee GARTH was born c1808 so was 6 years older (but perhaps he lowered his age when he married Emma who was very young at the marriage)

So whilst it is plausible that John WEBB from "Katherine Stewart Forbes" married 3 times, there is not enough evidence to definetely say they are the same person.

Thoughts?

Have added further citations for birth/baptism of:
Elizabeth Ann
Emmaline,
Eliza,
Susannah,
John,
James, and
F?. Webb (female)

Frederick Webb, born 1848, is the son of Henrietta Webb.

Emma Amelia Webb - Turner is not the daughter of John WEBB and Eliza ALOMES. She was a widow when she married TURNER - her first husband was ? WEBB

I have detached her.

A lot of sites have Frederick Edward Webb with the Henrietta being a transcription error - as the son of Elizabeth Ballantyne GARTH and or Eliza ALOMES,

Perhaps they are correct, perhaps they are not.

He is born in Richmond and no other of these 4 John WEBB's children are born in Richmond.

I will detach him from them until more evidence can be located

8/7/2018 at 5:59 AM

Other Webb's who have birth citations:

Bryant Webb; 1839; son of John & Clarissa Webb; of Hobart
Edwin Webb; 1841; son of John & Clarissa Webb; of Hobart
Mary Webb; 1843; daughter of John & Clarissa Webb; of Hobart
Emma Louisa Webb; 1855; daughter of John & Emma Webb of Hobart

Esther Jane Prior is the daughter of John WEBB and Ellen

A lot of sites have {Confirmed son of Henrietta} Frederick Edward Webb with the Ellen being a transcription error - as the daughter of Emma GARTH and or Eliza ALOMES,

I will detach her from them until more evidence can be located

8/7/2018 at 6:15 AM

Good!
Have noted Emma Amelia Webb married Charles Turner in 1874. The record gives her birthdate as 1928; no parents

Frederick Edward Webb, 1848, cited as the son of Henrietta Webb, nee Alomes, and John Webb
https://librariestas.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/client/en_AU/all/search/...

Peter Briggs, I think you descend from Frederick. His birth record has his mother as Henrietta Alomes. Do you have any other info on him?

You are correct in your assumption Leanne, I do indeed descend from Frederick he married Ann Duncan and they had a daughter Frances May Webb who married George Thomas Wright. George and May Wright are my paternal great grandparents

8/11/2018 at 9:38 PM

Sorry Leanne I forgot to add this but Esther Jane Webb was the daughter of John and Ellen Webb and was born in Hobart on the 28 Dec 1856, her father was listed as living in Murray St Hobart and gave his occupation as a confectioner. My John Webb ancestor never lived in Hobart and settled at Sorell where he lived all his life before passing away in 1873 in Sorell.

Going by this information I think Esther Jane Webb should be removed from FAMILY 4 as it is more likely she belongs to FAMILY 1.

Amelia Mary Webb who you have in FAMILY 2 belongs in FAMILY 4

Clarissa Webb nee Godson died on the 2nd April 1843 in Hobart her last address was given as Murray St and the death was informed by Godson Webb her son

Name: Webb, Clarissa
