Poor Charles Barnes, he's lost his wife and it is darn hard having baby girl Sarah Jane when you are appear to be 71 years old. And, how did he get across the Atlantic?

I don't want to be disrespectful and appreciate the work. I have myself many entries that are as weak as this one... If there is more documentation or even just circumstantial evidence, it would be wonderful if it were posted. Perhaps it exists but there just has not been time enough to put it up.

Some LDS enthusiastic workers are not very careful historians (and some are fantastic in their diligence). Just why is it thought that Sarah Jane Salmon is the granddaughter of Edward & Dorothy (Drury) Barnes? I want it to be true; but, it does not look likely. Let's talk about it.

I have been through the family before (I'm not related to them as I know but stumbled across some sources I wanted to add) but nothing on Charles.

Looking at the revisions, it looks like Sarah Salmon was added on the 4th May 2012 with a father Charles and then that Charles was merged into this one the next day.

I mean it isn't impossible (my wife's 4g-grandfather found himself in his sixties having outlived his wife and children, so he married a much younger woman and started all over again - confused the hell out us when we first added him to the tree). but I think it is just a bad merge partly prompted by a lack of dates making them seem more similar than they were (but also that should have been a red flag against the merge).

Can't really blame FamilySearch, as the tree is quite clear:

She is the daughter of this Charles Barnes:

Charles Barnes

I'm not sure what the source for that is - Find a Grave just states it but there is a lengthy comment suggesting her father was not Charles at all:

So 3 courses of action:

1. Split Sarah off and leave a note there asking for sources

2. Split her off and attach her to the other Charles Barnes, but based on little actual evidence

3. Split her off and attach her to William and Martha Barnes following the sources presented in the comment on the Find a Grave site

I assume this is that William, who is the second Charles' nephew:

Capt. William Barnes, of Westchester

You'd need to doublecheck with the Barnes Family Year Book and ,if that all checks out, I'd go with 3.

I'm running out of time now, but will check it later.

OK, I've run through the family and the Sarah daughter of William was born in 1692 and is thought to have died young:

Sarah Barnes

It'd make more sense for the second Charles to be her father, especially if his date of birth was 1632 (from FamilySearch) as opposed to 1617 (here).

Well I'm no expert, but Charles Barnes from https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LF8G-3ZL is listed as the GRANDSON of Edward and Dorothy Barnes

William Barnes (12 May 1580 – 1 December 1657) was the father. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/9DZ7-QV1

Thomasin Hovell (1582–1613) was his mother
