William Rutherford of Goochland County Shows as husband of Ursula Rutherford and son of Adam Rutherford, Sr. & Margaret Rutherford

He is not the same as Margaret Rutherford son of John Rutherford, of St. Ann’s Parish & Violetta Rutherford who also married Ursula Rutherford

So one of these William’s has a wrong wife and probably the children have been mixed.

Sources, anyone ?

I shall have to check and retrieve it from one of my trees on Ancestry. It may be a while though, as I have a funeral to attend tomorrow ... and bedtime now!

Parents for Onah Hodgson ?

One of her duplicates had her as Onah (unknown) Page, and there’s a dup Hannah Page with same dates & locations.

I am skeptical and disconnecting until a source is offered.

Found her, she was in the wrong generation.

Still need source data, but at least tree is making more sense.

Long way to go yet and I suspect a different Rutherford line mixed in.

If anyone can make sense of this narrative and the multiple Margaret Vawters I’ll return a gray hair to brown.

Robert Rutherford Sr. b. ca. 1634 Jedburgh, Scotland christened: 6 May 1640 Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland d. after 21 Aug 1728 probably in Essex Co., VA. wife: Maragaret The Margaret who married Robert Rutherford Sr. is not Margaret Vawter daughter of Bartholomew as is often cited. Margaret Vawter dau. of Bartho. married Thomas S. Tinsley III. The Margaret who m. Robert Rutherford, Sr. was b. ca 1644 according to a deposition in court listing her age. Bartholomew Vawter gave a gift of a cow calfe to this Margaret so her connection to him is yet unknown. It could be a sister or is old enough to be his mother who may have married for a second time. This is the common mistaken citation: "Robert Rutherford of Essex County, Virginia, was born in Jedburgh, Scotland, and married Margaret Vawter."(Brooks and Kindred Families, 1950. p. 295-296) Louise A. Keynton, Dallas, Texas, searched Essex County, Virginia records and also confirmed this statement. He was probably one and the same as the Robert Rutherford who was baptized May 6,1640, a son of Adam Rutherford of Hall and Janet Rutherford of Roxburgh County, Scotland. His father- in-law, Bartholomew Vawter was married to Winifred Hodgenand, had (8) children by her, one of them was Margaret Vawter born 1647 and died about 1735 in Esse x Co. VA. She was married to Robert Rutherford Sr.. Bartholomew Vawter had another unknown wife who produced another daughter named Margaret. She was born in 1672 probably in England and died in 1687 probably Essex, Va. I think Margaret Tinsley was not the wife of Robert Rutherford, Jr.

... very briefly Erica, I had found (undocumented) information that there were two Margaret Vawters who were half sisters. Both married Robert Rutherfords ... who were father (b1634) and son (b1664).
I will give this more attention when I return today.

So it looks like

- Robert Rutherford Sr married a Margaret Smithe
- Robert Rutherford Jr married a Margaret
- there is an undefined relationship with the Vawter family (widow Margaret Vawter? Sister of Bartholomew ???)
- Margaret, b 1667, daughter of Bartholomew, married Tinsley

Thanks Erica ... I shall take a good look at it over the next few days. I’m trying to establish my exact link to a DNA circle that I’m in. It has Cassandra Rutherford (hence my interest in the Rutherfords) and George Gray, whom I believe to be a descendant of Lady Jane Gray.
They all appear to lnk to my Thornbury line. Susanna Thornbury (1751) who married Isaac Stuart (1746) is in the circle. i have many dna links to their descendants.
Their daughter Mary Stuart was supposedly killed by Indians in Boonsborough. Isaac Stuart’s sister Mary Stuart George Gray . They had Joseph who was appointed guardian to the orphan children of Mary Stuart and her husband (her cousin) William Stewart. They may all link to Daniel Boone also.
I read a document online some years ago regarding all of this and thought I had it in one of my trees. I’ve search them all but to no avail! ...
Just wondering if you may know where I could locate the correct information?
