Hello!

The about section for Robert Winchell states that "His origin is unknown though he was certainly of England or Wales. There was a Thomas Wincoll in Watertown in 1632 and, in that year, his wife Elizabeth Wincoll, age 52, arrived on the Rebecca along with a son John, age 13. While there is no documentation which shows a relationship, it is possible that our Robert was related to this family."

The about section states that he was of unknown origin and might only be a possible relation to Thomas and Elizabeth. Here on his family tree we have Thomas and Elizabeth as Robert Winchell's parents. Going by the about section's information, should we remove Thomas Wincoll, of Watertown and Elizabeth Wincoll as Robert's parents?

Also, as mentioned above in the quote, the name of his wife in unknown, yet we have a second wife, Robert Winchell's wife in addition to the unknown Robert Winchell's wife attached to Robert.

Any thoughts?
Tamas

I see know that Robert Winchell's wife profile says that ""Mary Phelps" as a name is claimed for the wife of Robert Winchell of Windsor CT (daughter of William Phelps and Anne Dover) with no supporting evidence. Name also seen as Anna Crouch." I guess I'll go ahead and merge Robert's wife Mary into the unknown wife profile and just smooth over the conflicting data.

Robert Winchell's wife birth date is locked so I cannot change it, could a curator please set it back to circa 1611?

Done. Also disconnected Elizabeth Hodsdon - she cannot have been a child of Thomas Wincoll, of Watertown

His only known child was Capt. John Wincoll, of Kittery

The Winchell genealogy seems to think Capt. John Wincoll, of Kittery was the nephew of Elizabeth Wincoll not son.

This family needs more study; there’s a “three brothers” story going on.

I’ve been looking into the Wincoll (not Winchell) tree. The argument for Robert of Windsor as son of Thomas of Watertown is weak, from what I see so far.

https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Robert_Winchell_%281%29 Summarizes the bibliographic references for Winchell.

The Great Migration Project doesn’t even speculate a possible relationship. It seems entirely from the one Winchell Book.

The English family is discussed here.

So far I see no evidence for parents of Thomas of Watertown & his supposed brothers but I haven’t finished reading.

original pedigree diagram is printed across a double page with some information disappearing into the binding.
What didn't scan has been edited manually.

Thomas and Elizabeth underlined in red are possible migrants to New England.

There is a FAG memorial for him which shows parents: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/35692026/_

Parents
Thomas Winchell
1582–1657

Beatrice Winchell
1586–1655

Spouse
Mary Phelps Winchell
1612–1655

Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 FAG is a user submitted database, just like Geni. Its information is only as good as the sources that it contains and in this case it does not contain any that support this connection. Beatrice is supposedly the second wife of Thomas Wincoll, of Watertown (1582-1657), which was the father from whom we disconnected Robert Winchell due to a lack of proof to support the connection.

On a side note, it seems that Thomas' wives got merged together, so I'll try to fix that.

Tamas

Well, not only Is Robert Wincoll back after disconnect, but Thomas has acquired competing parent sets:

Robert Wyncoll, of London & Anna Wyncoll

Thomas Wyncoll, of Caxton & Susan Wyncoll

I’m disconnecting.

Thank you as always, Erica Howton

Whether Robert Winchell, one of the earliest of the name known in America and the probable progenitor of nine-tenths of those bearing the name in America, or any Winchell, wason board the Mary and John in 1630 is uncertain, but there is documentary proof that in 1632 a woman named Elizabeth Winchell, at the age of 52 years, came from London in the Rebecca with John Wincoll, aged 13, who is reported to have been the son of Thomas Wincoll, who came over earlier and presumably brought his wife, Beatrice, with him.

The line above is “not” supported by Anderson’s Great Migration project, which has Elizabeth Wincoll in 1635 (not 1632) as Thomas of Watertown’s 1st wife & mother of John of Kittery.

Someone has 1st wife Elizabeth as a Fleming.

I’ve found a further reason to consider Winchell and Wincoll as separate families:

https://archive.org/stream/winchellgenealog00winc/winchellgenealog0...

“ 5. The Winchell name has been traced back to 1412 (and in the form, de Winchelese, to 1194) and the Wyncoll name to about 1460 (and, in the form Wendecole, to 1361) without disclosing any connecting links. On the contrary, both families lived in England side by side for about two hundred years before the settlement of New England.

The conclusion is that there is an independent source known for each family and no connection between them.”

I know it is not proof but the following makes me to continue leaning toward Mary Phelps as Robert's wife: From "Winchell, Robert, Windsor--a juror in 1644. In '37 was appointed with Mr Ludlow and WIlliam Phelps as agents for the purchase of corn...." then lists the correct children. Now I want to try and find out more about this William Phelps to see if he is kin to Mary or not.
