Greetings,

I work for Geni and we've been contacted by a relative of Johan Severin Svendsen suggesting that Johan was not Lucien's father, but rather it was a man named Charles Christian Svendsen. This person provided some evidence for that claim. Can anyone find and upload evidence that Johan was, in fact, Lucien's father? I hate to start picking at users' individual trees but since these people were born more than 150 years ago, they are in the range of what Geni considers the public sphere where it becomes increasingly important that we rely on genealogically-sound evidence for everyone's benefit. I appreciate any information you can provide to support the information here.

Kind regards,

Mike at Geni

I appreciate you jumping in on this, Arnfred. I don't doubt any of the information on Lucien or his descendants -- I believe this comes directly from one of Lucien's grandchildren -- but it's the claimed descent from famed composer Johan Svendsen that is in question. It pains me to challenge the family on this, but Geni is a shared, collaborative resource so we have to follow the genealogical evidence.

While Johan Severin Svendsen is not particularly well known he is a public figure with a well documented life.

He first married in NYC to Sarah Levett in 1871. They divorced in 1901 and a few weeks later he married Juliette Vilhelmine Svendsen

It is possible that he had a child with a woman named Marie Louise Péan a year prior to marrying Sarah but the onus of proof is undoubtedly on the person making this claim rather than on anyone else to disprove it. Typically in this scenario I would disconnect the unproven spouse/child until supporting evidence is presented.

The only way to prove Lucien Jean-Baptiste Svendsen is _NOT_ Johan's child is to prove who is Lucien's father. Presumably, given that we have an exact date and place, someone with rudimentary skill at researching French birth records should be able to clear this up very easily.

Alex Moes I was given some documentation that supports the argument that Charles Christian Svendsen is Lucien's father. I can ask whether it's okay to share publicly, but I didn't want to come in so hard on it; right now I'm just trying to establish whether anyone familiar with this line could come up with any supporting evidence for Johan as Lucien's father.

Private User I deleted your last message because I don't want to put users on the spot.. it's a bit of a delicate situation. I've reached out to the manager directly asking for his input but if that is not forthcoming, it's up to the rest of us to try to come up with the most genealogically-sound evidence. The sources on Lucien Jean-Baptiste Svendsen are consistent with what was sent to me.

Mike,
Is it possible to share the information they have provided?

Due to the sensitive nature - just to a curator or 2 so they can evaluate it.

Mike, you said "...I was given some documentation that supports the argument that Charles Christian Svendsen is Lucien's father..." which ties in with my general point that no evidence exists that Johan Severin Svendsen was Lucien's father. It's hard to imagine what the sensitivities could be here given the time period but regardless, you have evidence for one and no evidence for the other, the only reason to not break the connection to Johan is if you doubt the veracity of the evidence that you have been sent.

If Geni staff don't want to be seen as making genealogical judgements in this case then as Leanne suggests I think you should share it privately with Curators and let us make the judgement call.

There are 3 documents on the profile - however they are in French and I can't read them.

Mike Stangel and Alex Moes

The 3 documents attached to Lucien Jean-Baptiste Svendsen profile are
1) Recognition by Charles Christian SVENDSEN on 31/5/1870 that Lucie Jean Baptiste (born 29 May 1870 son of Marie Louise PEAN) is his son
2) Marriage Record in October 1895 - Lucien changed his name from MAGOT to SVENDSEN, son of Charles Christian SVENDSEN and Marie Louise PEAN
3) Death Record for Lucien - son of Charles Christian SVENDSEN and Marie PEAN
If you look in the descriptions the documents have been translated into English

That is 3 primary records where Lucien's father is noted as Charles Christian SVENDSEN and 0 records connecting him to Johan Severin SVENDSEN

In my opinion, it is pretty conclusive that it is appropriate to disconnect Johan Severin Svendsen from Lucien and also from his mother.

Thank you Leanne.

Mike Stangel

Thanks for disconnecting Johan from Lucien

I think that the relationship between Johan and Marie also needs to be removed. There has been no evidence presented that indicates that she also had a relationship with him.

Leanne
