Re baptism doc here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GTW1-KWR?i=58&cc=1... / uploaded to profiles

bottom right - two men (Charles Daniel and Daniel Charles Toohey) in one block with different fathers (The father of the first is Daniel Charles, and the father of thesecond is Charles Daniel;) both adult baptisms at St Paul, Natal, Durban in 1870 - Abode: Tugela rapids; one - a hunter; the second a trader. No mothers mentioned.

Crossed out and ambiguously written.

Could it be?
Charles Daniel Toohey b March 1841 father: Daniel Charles (below) - ie Charles Daniel Toohey
&
Daniel Charles Toohey b 19 Aug 1808 father: Charles Daniel - ie Daniel Charles Toohey

Info on [[Daniel Charles Toohey Daniel Charles Toohey] DC Toohey], a ship’s cook, who liked to be addressed as ‘Doctor,’ who arrived at Port Natal early in 1835 aboard the ‘Circe’. Within 4 years he had established himself as the acknowledged chief of around 2000 Zulu refugees, and along with another English settler, Henry Ogle, had considerable territory extending down the coast from the Mgeni River. He worked as a trader for a Grahamstown firm, travelling up and down the country with two other traders – Robert Biggar and John Cane. He had at least one son, [[Tshali Toohey Tshali Toohey] Tshali] (The Zulu version of Toohey’s name, Charles) by a Zulu woman who lived at the Thukela. DC is thought to have married as well, a daughter of Minna - the Grosvenor castaway

Crampton, Hazel. ‘The Sunburnt Queen’. Johannesburg: Jacana. 2004. Print.

Further - given the abode on the baptism doc, could Tshali Toohey actually be the Charles Daniel Toohey on the doc?

DCToohey is both of their fathers.

Alternatively, are they two brothers -with different fathers?

and could the Zulu wife, NN Zulu wife of Toohey mother of Tshali Toohey

be the same woman as NN wife of Toohey said to have married DC Toohey?

cf Rachel Toohey who - with a Charles Toohey bap Maria Elizabeth Toohey bap Natal 09 May 1858 (Birth date: about 1837)

We assume that this Charles is DC Charles; but what if DC had a brother Charles - who is the other father in the baptism in the OP?

Tshali Toohey source ?Tshali would easily be nickname for Charles or Charly

I think it explicitly is. Hence the question.

Tshali source will be in Hazel Crampton's writing - Sorry. I haven't had a chance to look.

So Rachel and husband Charles Toohey d.o.b before 1823
According to birth of daughter.

We need to track Charles coming on a ship with, or after 'his brother'?

Busy looking at possibilities.

More Toohey baptisms of Children

Also Torhey and Tookey ,I believe to be Toohey transcribed wrong.

From my research Daniel Charles Toohey arrived in Port Natal in 1835 where he was a hunter and ivory trader. During the same year he signed a petition drawn up by the govenor of the Cape, Benjamin D’Urban, with other ivory traders at the time (the likes of R King and R Biggar) for the establishment on an infant colony named Victoria (in honour of the queen). He married Rachel and had a child Maria in 1837. (Maria later married George Charles Biggar, the son of Richard Biggar mentioned above with his Zulu wife).

It is my understanding Daniel Charles Toohey had a son Charles Daniel Toohey with his Zulu wife in 1841.

Charles Daniel Toohey had a son Daniel Charles Toohey with Aletta Sarah Ann in 1868.

It is my understanding that both father (CD) and son (DC) were baptized on the same day in 1870. No mother’s name is recorded for either one.

Hi, I'd like to connect with people researching DC & CD Toohey.

I am looking into Helenor/Eleanor/Lena Toohey, married surname Manning, born in Tugela
Helenor Elizabeth Manning

She married John Manning in nearby Mapumolo in 1865. The marriage witnessed by "C. D. Toohey" and permission is given by "father's consent".. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDCK-8VN

In her death certificate she is described as "half-caste". She moved to Kimberley with her husband but died at "Patana, Reserve No. V, Lower Umfolozi District" in Natal. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QG6P-68H3

It's been my assumption for some years that Helenor is the sister of C.D. Toohey and likely the daughter of D.C. Toohey, by a Zulu wife. But if any of you are researching and have any further details on this family, I would be very interested.

I probably have less info than you, but am really interested in your progress, Kimberley.

Could this be the informant on her DN John Henry 'Harry' Dunn - who married Anne Aletta Toohey?

Thanks for replying so fast!

Yes, seems plausible that the informant could be him. So Anne Alletta Toohey is C.D. Toohey's daughter, right? So Harry Dunn would be his son-in-law? i.e. Anne Alletta is Lena's niece, and Harry her nephew-in-law?

I had wondered why Lena might have returned to Natal at the end of her life (her husband J.S. Manning died 1907) but it makes sense if she had family there.

I don't suppose you have any idea what "Patana, Reserve No. V" might be? It sounds more like a whisky than a place!
