Hi Mary Gresham

From your comments at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Winn-248, it seems that you might be familiar with this family? Do you have any insights to offer, particularly on Margaret Winn

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/O'Conner-447 has no parents for her and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Winn-176 no parents for him, but it’s unclear to me about “Per FTDNA Surname project coordinator request(Feb 24, 2023), John Winn (b. 1668, d. 1730) and Martha Ann Bird (b. 1663, d. 1748) have been removed.”

This is the 1914 study, describing both Minor Winn & his wife Margaret O’Connor as immigrants, parents unnamed.

The Winns of Fairfield County: Colonel John Winn, William Winn, General Richard Winn, Chapter 1, Page 1, by Chappell, Buford Souter, 1914-https://digital.tcl.sc.edu/digital/collection/winns/id/12

THE MINOR WINN FAMILY OF VIRGINIA

Minor Winn came to Fauquier County, Virginia, from Wales in the early 1700's. His wife, Margaret O'Connor, came from Ireland. The Immigrant Minor Winn made his will on July 1, 1775, and it was proven on March 23, 1778. He named his wife, Margaret, his executrix; and his son, Minor (Jr.), his executor. Stephen Tolle, Thomas White, and James Fleming witnessed the will. …

This study is not dated, but has good citations and links to sources.

“Minor Winn 1704 Virginia - 1778 Virginia” >

On parentage s/he notes:

Minor Winn 1704 Virginia - 1778 Virginia

Origin

Born in 1704 in Westmoreland county, MS Virginia.

He may be the son+ of Minor Winn MS and Martha Ann Mary Byrd of Caroline co., MS Virginia. + The connection from this Minor Winn to Winn-Byrd is not proven. 1

Minor may have been born in England or Wales. 1
Or Eden Plantation, Prince William co.--the Byrd estate of his mother's family

Marriage - Margaret Connor

Minor Winn married Margaret O'Connor in Westmoreland county, Virginia. MS before 1727. (based on est. date of first childbirth) Was her name actually Connor (as shown in her mother's will).

Margaret was born in Ireland. MS * Margaret is said to be from Maryland. Her mother was born in Ireland. Margaret is named in her mother, Margaret Connor's Will. Why does she give everything to a son named James Connor? Did she have a son by a previous marriage?

Margaret was likely born in Essex or K&Q co., VA to James and Margaret Conner. James died in Spotsylvania co. by November 2, 1725. 5

It seems probable that it was her Connor brothers that witness the Winn deeds below.

NOTE: There is a second Minor Wynn marriage already established in VA. Many old family histories combine all of the Minors into one or erroneously connect them to each other, or erroneously connect them to Robert of Canterbury through Joshua Wynn. 1

Y DNA

Minor Winn shows in groups K1a. K1b, K1ca, with haplogroup R-M269 and its derivatives.

I do not see results for John Winn who married Martha Ann Winn and his ancestors listed.

And - I’m wrong about Margaret Winn origins.

She is clearly named in the 1745 Will of Margaret Conner

http://www.ancestor-rescue.com/Winn/Documents/MargaretConnerWill174...

WILL OF MARGARET CONNER
Culpeper Co., VA
Made: 4 Mar 1745, Proved: 16 May 1751
In the name of God amen I Margaret Conner ( widow) ….

Item I give to my beloved daughter MARGARET WINN an equal part of my waring cloath.

I will change her birth place to “probably Virginia” and upload the Will to profiles.

https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I8135... Has no origins for James Conner or his Margaret. Mike Marshall’s database has their daughter Margaret Conner b. Abt 1710 in Essex County, married Minor Winn abt 1726 in Spotsylvania County.

https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I3627...

I believe this profile has the most complete discussion on why John Winn is an unproven person and his wife Martha Byrd is also unsourced.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Winn-248 Many old genealogies has been found to have theories and speculation that cannot be verified by modern research. The suspicion is that the mother of Minor Winn had a last name of Minor is based on assumption. He could have been named after a close family friend, a grandparent, etc.

If you have questions, you may want to email Rev. Cynthia Forde for the DNA results on different Winn lines and the lack of sources for any person named John Winn or Martha Byrd.

Hopes this helps
Mary

It helps very much, Mary Gresham thank you.

I’ve detached Minor Winn as son of John Winn & Martha Ann Winn

If better evidence is shown they can be reconnected. The Y DNA project looks active, so that would be where more evidence of Minor Winn’s origins could emerge from.

I've been searching through the probate records for members of the Winn family of Virginia. I was searching for John Winn since somewhere I read that there was one.
https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/62347/?name=_winn&count=10

No luck on him, but it wasn't a total waste of time because I did find the Will for Minor Winn. It's now attached to his profile.
Minor Winn

Oops! I see above that you already found a copy of Minor and Margaret's Wills.
