Hi Cynthia,
Thank you for the list…
There are several lists out there and it’s a work in progress now…we are aware of the bronze plaque and it is “a” source.

I’ve just purchased the book “Vanishing in Hiawatha” and it too has a list researched by the author. There was a cemetery plat that hung on the wall in the facility administrators office that has disappeared but was apparently kept current say some of the employees. It also has the interment date of the arrivals. There is also a well researched list at WikiTree here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Canton_Asylum. There are annual lists located at AccessGenealogy. And there are lists located in NARA in a file titled “Camp Verde School: 1910-27; Canton Insane Asylum: 1910-22”, an 1145 page compilation of official annual reports by the facility itself, different of course. Take your pick! At some point it is our plan to have a list of cemetery burials hyperlinked to the profile.

Be aware that there are currently ongoing investigations by the “Keepers of the Story” in SD and ground penetrating reader has shown anomalies in the ground that lead to speculation that additional unidentified bodies may be buried there, so this is an ongoing effort. We are reaching out to the various entities involved in this and update as we learn something new that can be properly sourced. This will be an ongoing investigation of unknown duration…we have already begun creating profiles for those buried as well as other players like politicians who were involved. See for example:
Edward Hedges
Robert Grosvenor Valentine, Commissioner of Indian Affairs June 1909–September 1912
There are others, profiles have been linked to the projects

We’ve created two projects, one for the asylum and one for the cemetery to be able to better manage to volume of source material we are finding. See Edward Hedges for example. And BTW, FaG is, has become, a copy and paste source, much of the data is unreliable and I personally use it as a tertiary source that Geni guidelines suggest should be used for leads only and not as a source.

Thank you for the addition of Lowe War but a find a grave link is not enough. It is our goal to tell the story of the persons involved, see Edward Hedges for example. He was btw the first admission to the asylum, but #117 on the list you provide, so we have work to do and decisions to make.

BTW, the link in your message above sends one to a 404 page not found

See the projects and look at documents, uploaded last evening were lists from Clara Joinson’s book, this is probably the lists we will use, they were “professionally” researched and seem to be the most complete.

I will be cleaning them up…

Private User yes... in adding to the Big Tree, I noticed 127 memorials but only 121 names. I counted 40 in two rows and 41 in the first one on the plaque but could not read them all so set out to find a list.
The first one I had to separate out one by one and the last one was already enumerated.
It just helps me to keep them straight and I have already had success with the FaG memorial manager(s) merging a duplicate...
I have been doing a search for these before adding to Geni but name variations may be an issue and some dups will present themselves.
Happy to help.

Private User regarding "Thank you for the addition of Lowe War but a find a grave link is not enough. It is our goal to tell the story of the persons involved, see Edward Hedges for example. I am simply adding profiles to the Project and if they are not on Geni already, I add them--- it is the Hiawatha Asylum Cemetery Project
I know nothing but can add a profile based on where one is buried. This can be one of the most tedious parts of a Project, I believe.

Again, it is not "my list"
:)

A suggestion would be to have a list of the patients in order of admission if such a list exists-- that would be excellent for the Hiawatha Asylum for Insane Indians Project https://www.geni.com/projects/Hiawatha-Asylum-for-Insane-Indians/44...

The Cemetery Project has the names in perhaps alphabetical order, is what I typically find.... spelling errors is how often times duplicate memorials are added-- because someone adds one with a certain spelling and someone else adds one as well...

"BTW, the link in your message above sends one to a 404 page not found"

sorry-- which link?
I see https://sites.rootsweb.com/~sdlincol/hiawatha.htm
Let me know if there is another.... I will repost

I understand it’s not your list, my point was there are a number of lists with different content available, which list to be used would be a decision made by those who are building the project. The date of admission is not available for all, record keeping prior to 1910 is almost non existent, and record keeping during Dr. Hummers tenure was politically motivated and a means of self sustainability, therefore suspect…

Secondly, adding a profile to a project is simply a couple of taps. Again, my point was that the tedious work is the research on each person, creating the story of the here to fore unknown (which in several cases were flat out lies), and we would like to see a profile update, the story told, before it gets attached. If all yo do is attach, then someone else has to go back and edit the profile, but which have the story written and which do not, that becomes tedious. Some of these people don’t have profiles and will need to be created in an isolated branch.

We appreciate all the help we get, but one big detriment in Geni is that profiles are created with NO sourcing, we would like to avoid that and at the same time improved the content of the platform. While your enthusiasm is appreciated, we’ve yet to determine a numbering system to order these people, is #1 Edward Hedges the first to be enrolled as a patient, or #117 from the list on the marker, what does #117 mean, was it order of death date?

I would suggest discussions with the project team before adding to the project so that we can see where the task fits in the overall plan. We’re not just creating a new list. We’re creating a memorial of sorts, to those who were unceremoniously enrolled and interred for reason having nothing to do with mental health. This is an issue hidden from American history because of the insult to common decency, there is a lot being discussed with regards to how best to build the project. It’s not necessary nor even advisable to have 121 profiles added by Saturday!

Thank you, but slow down, talk to us first. Some of the mental disorders “diagnosed”, if you were to Google search today, do not even show up!

The rootsweb site you link is already a source we have listed

Your original message had this

Subject: 121 names. 127 FaG memorials--- several are duplicates. This is one list here at https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=183486:

The hmbd returns a bad request

Private User the list was already on the project.

I still don't see where you mention I have a link that isn't working unless you fixed it

If there are 121 known buried (which there is, per several lists and websites and etc) there is no reason NOT to add the profile.

I am not fleshing them out and it certainly takes more than a few clicks.
I have created several Cemetery Projects myself and was proud to have the Project complete. This is tedious work and I am happy to help.
You can PM me if you would like.

Oh, I see! The title of this discussion:

121 names. 127 FaG memorials--- several are duplicates. This is one list here at https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=183486:

You have to disregard the : as it is not part of the link

Catkaptecena 'Philip Doctor'
Catkaptecena 'Philip Doctor' 1821 – 19 Jun 1906 proof he is buried here? Not one of the 121 on the plaque

Emely Waite
not there either.

The cemetery project now has the confirmed 121 listed on the plaque.

''Note: There are 121 names on the memorial marker and yet there are 127 memorials. Will send a request to the managers at FaG to merge.~CHCurtis 1 August 2023. This note will be removed once the memorials are updated.''

Today this is complete <3
