The book is known as: "Documents relative to the colonial history: procured in Holland, England and France" (Google eBook)

There are variant spellings of some of the 93 names… Still looking for a source for the
original document. It seems that some signers just made a "mark" (being illiterate).

Many if these names can be found as lot owners on the Map of the Original Grants of Village Lots
from the Dutch West India Company to the Inhabitants of New Amsterdam drawn by Henry D. Tyler,
1897. These are grants commencing 1642. A Source for this map is: the book: Mapping New York,

shown.

Nice information for a special new Geni-Project to collect those names together, don't you think @George ?

Historians have portrayed Stuyvsant as recalcitrant in the surrender of New Amsterdam. It occurs to me that there is a possibility that Petrus wanted to surrender and used this remonstrance to demonstrate to the DWIC that he had cause to surrender. In other words, he was covering his tracks, so to speak. I say this because so many of his own extended family signed. It does not seem logical that his own family would have "remonstrated" if they knew their patriarch wanted to fight to the death... as some historians contend.

    A.
1656 01 Dec; Abraham Kermer, van Hamburg; Metje Davids, van Aernhem (~•note that Aernhem is in Gelderland ~• Metje Davids is probably the daughter of either Isaac or Tomas Davidz (sic) who we see signing the remonstrance to Pieter Stuyvesant in September 1655.

Keeping in mind that a Thomas Davidszen witnessed the baptism of his fellow country man Denys (or Dionys!) Isaacszen Van Hertevelt's daughter. The connections are between three families : the Davids, the Issacszens, and the van Cortlands. It is good to look at the document on the Remonstrance of 1665, too, for that is where two Davids, Dionys Issacqs (sic)

    12. (Olaf) Stephanus van Cortlandt (of Wijk bij Duurstede)
    21. Tomas Davits (relation to Metje Davids unknown)
    47. Dionys Isaacqs (of Wijk bij Durrstede)
    49. Arent Isaacqs

All these men were from the Gelderland area. Perhaps they were soldiers w/ Van Cortland, this being why they were present at the fort on that fateful day of surrender to England.

September 6, 1664

New Amsterdam, New Netherland

Description:

The British offered Petrus Styuyvesant the option to surrender. The citizens of New Amsterdam eventually persuaded him to accept with this petition. (I count 93 individuals who signed this) Some were even Stuyvesant relatives (sons-in-law).
