Samuel married (1) _____ _____ who died before 15 July 1727 (Samuel's intention to marry second wife).[1][4] The children named in Samuel's will were all married before he married his second wife, so were the children of his first wife.

Disputed Origins

The Mayflower Index 1932 and NEHGR 102:49 listed his wife as Ruth Hopkins d/o Gyles and Catherine (Wheldon) Hopkins). Gyles 1682 will and 1688/9 codicil, probated 1690, do not mention any daughters[5][1]

It has been suggested that the wife of Samuel Mayo was Ruth Hopkins, the daughter of Giles and Catherine (Whelden) Hopkins, but no proof has been found,[1][2] and in the 2014 Mayflower Families volume on Elder William Brewster it is indicated that the name of Samuel Mayo's first wife is completely unknown. It confirms that this unknown first wife is the mother of all of his children and that she probably died in Eastham before 15 July 1727.[3]

In the 2019 Brewster Silver Book (Part 3) all seven children (Hannah, Sarah, Samuel, Jonathan, Rebecca, Mary, and Mercy) are listed as being the children of Samuel with no mention of a mother.[4]
