About Sir John Charles Molteno, K.C.M.G.

First Prime Minister of the Cape Colony, tenure from 1872-1878 Sir John Charles Molteno was an early citizen of Beaufort Wes - a wool trader, creator of the extensive Nelspoort Estate, and such a champion of responsible government that he was nicknamed ‘the Lion of Beaufort.’ He founded the town’s first bank in 1854, and became the first prime minister at the Cape. He died on 1 September 1886 and was interred at St Saviour's in Claremont, Cape Town. The town of Molteno, in the Stormberg Mountains of South Africa, is named after him
