Book Review A biography of a key political figure of old days

How many people are familiar these days with the name of Abdul Matin Chowdhury?

A key political figure of this part of the world during the last few decades of British rule in the Sub-continent, Abdul Matin Chowdhury had rare qualities of a successful politician. He had several stints as minister in Assam. He was involved in trade unionism. He also curved out a niche for himself in journalism. He was a working journalist as well as a promoter of several newspapers, both in English and Bangla. His literary works were also well known.

But it was politics that was Chowdhury's cup of tea. The interest and involvement in the other areas were a passion for him. He made his debut in the political arena by going to jail as a young activist as early as in 1923. Since then he continued a mission in public life with zeal and dedication untill his premature death in 1948 at the age of 53.

Abdul Matin Chowdhury and politics of Assam had become almost synonymous. He was closely associated with the Sub-continent's political stalwarts like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, C R Das and Muhammad Ali Jinnah during the stormy and turbulent phase freedom struggle against the British colonial rulers. He also played a role in the shaping of the things.

Publicity shy and somewhat reticent, Abdul Matin Chowdhury remains largely unknown to many of us of the older generation - let alone the present-day generation. A book on him by noted historian, Professor Dr Atful Hye Shibly, brings the forgotten man into the focus with description of his topsy-turvy political life. The title of the book is Abdul Matin Chowdhury - Trusted Lieutenant of Mohammad Ali Jinnah. Dr Shibly describes the life of Chowdhury not from any particular political angle. The author says history has its own character and this book is a document based on extensive research. The venture should be seen in that perspective. Needless to say that Chowdhury was strongly attracted by the personality of Jinnah and had emerged as one of his close associates.

"But it remains a mystery that Abdul Matin Chowdhury was not properly evaluated after the creation of Pakistan despite his valuable contribution," observed Finance Minister A M A Muhith at the launching of the book recently. Fittingly, the occasion took place in Sylhet where Chowdhury spent much of his time in public life and journalism. However, his main area of activity was Shillong in present-day Assam.

The speakers at the book launching ceremony paid rich tribute to the Matin Chowdhury, who possessed versatile qualities. They showered praises on him because of his integrity and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the common masses. "My father left too small an amount of money in the bank when he died even though he was minister on several occasions with important portfolios in Assam," said his only surviving son Juned Ahmed Chowdhury.

Celebrated historian and National Professor Salauddin Ahmed paid tributes to Chowdhury as a selfless politician. In a message read out at the function, he observed that the emergence of Pakistan on the basis of religion was an erroneous concept while events were such that things moved inexorably to that direction. Discussants on the book included Prof M A Aziz , Vice-Chancellor of Metropolitan University, Prof Salehuddin, Vice-Chancellor, Shahjalal University, Badruddin Ahmed Kamran, Mayor of the Sylhet City Corporation and senior journalist Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury.

Dr Shibly has taken painstaking effort in compiling many valuable information and collecting rare photographs of historical value that have found place in the book. Printed at BRAC Printers, the 196-page book also contains several pages in Bangla from the diary of Abdul Matin Chowdhury. This inclusion has been worthwhile as some speakers remarked that more documents would enrich the book.

স্টাফ রিপোর্টারঃ অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল মাল আব্দুল মুহিত বলেছেন, বিশিষ্ট রাজনীতিবিদ আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরীর ছিলো চমৎকার জীবন। তিনি বিভিন্ন অঙ্গনের সাথে যুক্ত ছিলেন। তিনি সংবাদিকতায় অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রেখেছেন। জেলে যাবার মাধ্যমে তার রাজনীতির শুরু হয়। তিনি ছিলেন বিপ্লবী চিন্তাধারার মানুষ। শিলংয় তিনি খানসামাদের নিয়ে সংগঠন করেছিলেন। কলকাতায় সী-ম্যানদের নিয়ে এসোসিয়েশন করে আন্দোলন করেছিলেনয রাখেন রাজনীতিবিদ আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরীর পুত্র জুনেদ চৌধুরী, অনুষ্ঠানে বিশেষ অতিথির বক্তব্য রাখেন সিলেট সিটি কর্পোরেশনের মেয়র বদর উদ্দিন আহমদ কামরান, শাহজালাল বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভাই চ্যান্সেলর প্রফেসর মোঃ সালেহ উদ্দিন, সিলেট জেলা পরিষদের প্রশাসক আব্দুজ জহির চৌধুরী সুফিয়ান। সভায় অন্যান্যের মধ্যে আলোচনায় অংশ নেন ভারতের বিশিষ্ট ইতিহাসবিদ ড. কামাল উদ্দিন আহমদ, বিশিষ্ট সাংবাদিক জগলুল আহমদ চৌধুরী। সভায় প্রধান বক্তা জাতীয় অধ্যাপক ড. এফ. সালাহউদ্দিন আহমদের লিখিত বক্তব্য পাঠ করেন গ্রন্থের লেখক ড. আতফুল হাই শিবলী। অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল মাল আব্দুল মুহিত আরো বলেন, রাজনীতিবিদ আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরী পাকিস্তানের অন্যতম নির্মাতা ছিলেন, কিন্তু পাকিস্তান সৃষ্টির পর তাকে সে অনুযায়ী উপযুক্ত সম্মান দেখানো হয়নি। তিনি অত্যন্ত উঁচু মাপের মন্ত্রী ছিলেন। আমরা অনেকেই তা জানি না। মন্ত্রী জীবনে তিনি বিভিন্ন বিভাগে মন্ত্রীর দায়িত্বে ছিলেন এবং প্রতিটি বিভাগেই তিনি কৃতিত্বের স্বাক্ষর রেখেছেন। প্রফেসর মোঃ সালেহ উদ্দিন বলেন, রাজনীতিবিদ আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরী বেঁচে থাকলে নিশ্চয় মাওলানা ভাসানীর আহবানে কাগমারী সম্মেলনে যোগ দিতেন এবং ভাসানীর মতো তিনি পাকিস্তানকে আস্সালামু আলাইকুম বলে বিদায় জানাতেন। মেয়র বদর উদ্দিন আহমদ কামরান বলেন, আমাদের সমাজের ক্ষণজন্মা কিছু মানুষের একজন ছিলেন রাজনীতিবিদ আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরী। তাকে নিয়ে অত্যন্ত পরিশ্রমের মাধ্যমে ড. শিবলী গ্রন্থটি রচনা করেছেন। মেয়র কামরান বইটি বাংলায় অনুবাদ করার উপর গুরুত্বারোপ করেন। আব্দুজ জহির চৌধুরী সুফিয়ান বলেন, ড. শিবলী পরিশ্রমের মাধ্যমে গ্রন্থটিতে ইতিহাসের লুক্কায়িত কথা তুলে ধরেছেন। রাজনীতিবিদ মতিন চৌধুরীর কাছে ছিলো সবকিছুর উপর মানুষ সত্য। তার ত্যাগ ছিলো মানুষের জন্যে। তিনি ছিলেন অত্যন্ত জিনিয়াস মানুষ। ইতিহাসবিদ ড. কামাল উদ্দিন আহমদ বলেন, রাজনীতিবিদ আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরী স্থানীয় পর্যায়ের নেতা ছিলেন না। তিনি ছিলেন-সর্বভারতীয় পর্যায়ের নেতা, যেমন ছিলেন সিলেটের বিপিন পাল। বিশিষ্ট সাংবাদিক, জগলুল আহমদ চৌধুরী বলেন, আমদের ইতিহাসে একজন আলোচিত ও কৃতি ব্যক্তিত্ব আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরী। তিনি অনেক কিছু ছিলেন এবং ছিলেন একজন বড় মাপের সাংবাদিক। অনেক গুণের সমন্বয়ে ছিলেন খ্যাত। বাংলা-ইংলিশ দুটো ভাষায় সাংবাদিকতা করেছেন। বহুমাত্রিক পরিচিতি ছিলো তার। আজ আমরা এক গর্বিত জাতি। এই পথ পরিক্রমায় অনেকে অবদান রেখেছেন-আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরী ছিলেন তাদের মধ্যে অন্যতম। লেখক অভিব্যক্তি ব্যক্ত করতে গিয়ে ড. আতফুল হাই শিবলী বলেন, আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরীর জীবন ও কর্ম সম্পর্কে লিখতে গিয়ে ইতিহাসের ছাত্র হিসেবে সঠিক তথ্য তুলে ধরার প্রয়াস চালিয়েছি। মুসলিম লীগের শতবর্ষ পূর্তিতে পাকিস্তানে আয়োজিত সম্মেলনে আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরী সম্পর্কে একটি প্রবন্ধ উপস্থাপন করেছিলাম। তারাও জানতেন না মতিন চৌধুরী কতো বরেণ্য জননেতা ছিলেন। স্বাগত বক্তব্যে জুনেদ চৌধুরী বলেন, আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরী প্রভাবশালী রাজনীতিবিদ, মন্ত্রী হওয়া সত্ত্বেও মৃত্যুর পর তার ব্যাংক ব্যালেন্স ছিলো মাত্র চারশ’ টাকা। সভাপতির বক্তব্যে প্রফেসর মোহাম্মদ আব্দুল আজিজ বলেন, আব্দুল মতিন চৌধুরী বর্তমান সময়ে সবচে কম আলোচিত রাজনীতিবিদ। বর্তমান প্রজন্মের অনেকেই তার নাম জানে না। রাজনীতির জন্যে তিনি জেল খেটেছেন, তিনি ছিলেন অত্যন্ত দক্ষ পার্লামেন্টারিয়ান। ড. শিবলীর গ্রন্থ প্রসঙ্গে তিনি বলেন, এটি নিছক একটি জীবনী গ্রন্থ নয়। এটি ইতিহাসের একটি আমর গ্রন্থ। অনুষ্ঠানের শেষে একটি মনোজ্ঞ সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।=
