About Abigail McCracken

ABIGAIL2 BLACK (JOHN1) died Bef. October 01, 1779. She married HENRY MCCRACKEN. He died September 24, 1780. Notes for HENRY MCCRACKEN: Children of ABIGAIL BLACK and HENRY MCCRACKEN are: i. ABIGAIL3 MCCRACKEN, b. 1770, Pennsylvania; m. WILLIAM SMITH, April 05, 1792, Sherman's Valley, Perry, Pennsylvania; b. 1770, New York or Pennsylvania. Notes for ABIGAIL MCCRACKEN: February 1999 John Worden, who is a gggggrandson of Abigail McCrackens brother John McCracken, sent the following information to me. John Worden scanned these pages from a book, which he has entitled "The Descendents of John McCracken" by Constable McCracken published by Gateway Press Inc. in 1979. CHAPTER 3 ABIGAIL, SAMUEL and REBECCA McCRACKEN Very little has been found concerning the three oldest children of Henry McCracken (1) and Abigail Black, his first wife. No extensive effort has been made to trace them, since this book is primarily intended to be a record of the descendents of John McCracken (14), believed to be the youngest of their children. What little has been learned about John's sisters and brother is set out below. ABIGAIL McCRACKEN Rachel Stephenson has told us that Abigail McCracken (11) was born in Tyrone (later Saville) Township, Cumberland (later Perry) County, Pennsylvania. I have assumed that her birth may have been in 1770. It appears probable that it was she who married William Smith on 5 Apr. 1792 at Center Presbyterian Church, though there is no proof that the Abigail so married was the daughter of Henry McCracken (1) and Abigail Black. A search of the records of Cumberland and Perry counties for any deeds executed by a William Smith having a wife named Abigail disclosed only one. On 30 Aug 1798 Alexander Clark had conveyed to William Smith a tract of land containing 4 acres, 102 perches, situate in Tyrone and Juanita Townships, Cumberland Cnty, bounded on the south by other lands of Alexander Clark. On 13 May 1799 Wilson McClure (so far as I know, no relation of Mary McClure McCracken) conveyed a tract of 108 acres, 154 perches, also in Tyrone and Junta Townships, to William Smith for L45. On 22 Jun 1799, one month after the second of the above deeds, William Smith and Abigail, his wife, conveyed both of the above parcels to John You for L150. The deed of 13 May 1799 to William Smith describes him as "of Tyrone Township" while the deed of 22 Jun 1799 from him describes him as "of Juanita Township". Where they went from there I do not know. No further record of Willam and Abigail Smith has been found in Cumberland or Perry Counties." The will of Rebecca McCracken (13), Abigail's younger sister, dated 19 Jan 1828 and proved 29 Apr 1828 at Xenia, Ohio, bequeaths "to my sister Abigail, and her husband of the state of Pennsylvania" 25 cents. This was out of a total estate of $62.97 3/4. Whether Rebecca actually knew that Abigail and her husband (note that he is not named) were still living and "out of Pennsylvania", we have no way of knowing. It may be that that was where they were the last tine she had heard from them, which might have been many years before, and that this nominal legacy was included in the Will merely to show that she had not forgotten her sister. Nothing further is known about Abigail (McCracken) Smith (11). Notes for WILLIAM SMITH: Oct. 1998 I found the following marriage information on the U.S. Gen Web. William Smith & Abigail McCracken were married on April 5, 1792 in the Centre Presbyterian Church, Shermans Valley, Perry Cnty., Pennsylvania by the Rev. John Linn. At this time Perry Cnty., was Cumberland Cnty. More About WILLIAM SMITH: Occupation: Farmer ii. SAMUEL MCCRACKEN. iii. REBECCA MCCRACKEN (NEVER MARRIED). iv. JOHN MCCRACKEN, m. MARTHA WILSON.
