John and Abigail Black came from Ireland to Perry Co. PA and lived on a farm in Saville township, known as the McGurlen Farm, located on the north side of Raccoon Creek extending to Tuscarora Mountain. They were said to have come to Perry co. prior to 1750. John acquired his tracts of 205 acres on March 23, 1763, and on August 16, 1766.

In the Name of God. Amen I John Black Sen(?) of the Township of Tyrone in the County of Cumberland and a Province of Pennsylvania farmer being low in health but of sound mind and memory and calling to mind the Certainty of Death & the uncertainty of the Time thereof Do make Constitute and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following and first principally of All I resign my soul Almighty God who give it and my body to the Dust to be buried in a Decent and Christian Like manner at Discration of my Executors hereafter Named Nothing Doubting But I shall Receive the same again at the Resurrection of the Dead by the Almighty power of God and touching my Worldly Estate whereof I am possessed or have power or have power to dispose of I will bequeath to my beloved wife Abigail Black the room at the East End of the house with firewood Laid into her also one horse & one cow to be kept for her with a sufficient stock of kitchen laid into her Yearly the case of Drawers and the Pewter with all the Beds and Bedding belonging to the house and one pot also one half dozen of sheep kept for her also I will & bequeath unto my son James Black the whole of that Plantation situate in Rye Township near Juniata River held by warrant in the name of my sd Jon & what other effects he has got also I will & bequeath unto my son John Black the whole of that plantation situate in Rye Township held by a Deed in the name of my said son Jon & whatever effects he has got provided he pay forty pounds gold or silver also I will & bequeath unto my son George Black one hundred pounds & what other affects he has got also I will bequeath unto my son William Black five pounds and what other affects he has got also I will bequeath unto my son Samuel Black fifteen pounds and what other affects he has got & also I will bequeath unto my Daughter Jean & her husband Jonathan Robinson thirty pounds & what other affects he has got also I will bequeath unto my daughter Rebekah and her husband Samuel Shaio? thirty pounds & what other effects she has got also I will and bequeath unto my daughter Rachel & her husband Thomas Stevenson thirty pounds & what other affects she has got also I will & bequeath unto my son Jonathan Black the whole of that Plantation we now live on also that other plantation situate in Pemms(?)Creek held by a location providing he pay of the Legatees as they came due (?) George Black in the year 1791 Wm. int. the year 1792 Samuel in the year 1793 Jean in the year 1794 Rebekah in the year 1795 Rachel in the year 1796 also I will and bequeath unto my granddaughter Abigail McCrakon one cow and calf also I will & bequeath unto my granddaughter Rebekah McCrakon one cow also I will & bequeath unto my (?)Landson John McCrakon one cow also I will & bequeath unto my eight grandsons named John one pocket bible to each also I do hereby constitute & ordain(?) or appoint these my two sons Von(?) Be it remembered that on the 28th day of Sept. 1790 the last will & testament of John Black dec.d was legally proved of which the foregoing Record is a true Copy and Letters Testamentary Issued in Common form to George and Jonathan Black Executors within mentioned on the said 28th day of Sept., 1790 Inventory & Account to be Exhibited into the Registers office in the Borough of Carlisle in the time appointed by law. Dear Val -- Some of my findings are below without real documentation; some I can provide later. William's father was John Black (1720-1790) of Saville, Cumberland County, PA. He discusses this in his service record. Another source I have met is Bessie Black Byrnes indicated JB arrived in Cumberland aroudn 1757 during the Indian massacres, but stayed at Robinson's fort due to "ill" health which didn't show up in the histories. This would have been between 1757 and 1763. JB came from Dauphin (Derry) or Marsh Creek as a possible starting point in PA. I have confirmed that James Black was John Black's father from two sources and moved with him to Cumberland in the 1750's. James bought land and deeded some of it to John around 1763. I have a plat of land in Cumberland with James' name next to John Black's. They possibly came with the Robinson's from N. Ireland and also the Elliots, Ramseys, Lowreys, Alricks, etc who were also in the Derry area before Cumberland. Also a descendant of the Elliots told me that James was John's father. The sons Jonathan, Samuel and William left PA around 1800 and went south. I had thought that they had married women with the surnames of Gass or Reaugh that were neighbors of the Blacks in Cumberland, but someone thought Jonathan married an Indian woman in Tennessee. Samuel was killed in Tennessee by Indians. William Black went from North Carolina to Kentucky to Tennessee and moved to Alabama until 1830 or so when he moved to Arkansas. In the 1810 census Charles Wheaton and Jonathan B. are listed together in Wayne County, Mississippi. I also have a document with Jonathan and William's signatures while they were in Tennessee (Roane Co.) regarding the sale of Jonathan's farm in PA William Linn, a neighbor. I think William was "on the outs" with his PA kin and wasn't given much in the will. Do you want the will? Dave B.
