Early New England Harrington Families
One of the difficulties in dealing with the New England Harrington families is to keep them separate. There were at least 3 early Harrington families.

  • 1. ROBERT HARRINGTON of Watertown, born in England in 1616, who settled in Watertown in 1634.
  • 2. ABRAHAM HARRINGTON of Cambridge, whose male descent died out in a generation or two.
  • 3. BENJAMIN HARRINGTON of Providence, Rhode Island, an entirely different family, possibly though not necessarily, related to the other two. This family generally spelled the name Herrington or Herrenden. Robert and Benjamin each had numerous descendants. Generally speaking, Robert's descendants remained in eastern Massachusetts, chiefly in Middlesex and Worcester counties, for several generations. Benjamin's descendants were to be found in Rhode Island and easten Connecticut during the same early period. They also began to expand geographically westward and northward, so that by the time of the Revolutionary War, the descendants of these two pioneers often lived in the same towns, especially north and west of the Rhode Island border, and occasionally they intermarried.
  • Frequently, they used the same Christian name, Benjamin, Edward, Robert, Joseph, David, Samuel, Daniel and John being favorites in both families
