ERRINGTON, ANN (otherwise written Erinton, Arrington, Herrington, and Harrington), a widow, died here 11 Dec. 1653; or according to the inscription on her gravestone, the most ancient now standing in our burial ground, 25 Dec. 1653, a. 77. She was formerly of Newcastle-on-Tyne, as appears by a document recorded Mid. Reg. Deeds, i. 87. It is not known at what time she came here, nor whether she was at that time a widow. She left children, Abraham; Rebecca, who m. John Watson; and possibly Robert of Watertown. (History of Cambridge)

She was the Anne Liddell who married William Errington 16 Sept 1619 at All Saints, Newcastle.[1]

"She may be that Ann Liddell baptized 10 Dec 1598, St Nicholas, Newcastle, daughter of John Liddell, but researches into the Liddells are so far inconclusive."[2]

Immigration about 1638.[3]

Ann Errington (Erington) died Dec. 11, 1653, although her gravestone says Dec. 25, 1653, a. 77. (b. 1576? an exaggeration?)[6] She is buried at the Old Burying Ground (Harvard Square) in Cambridge, spelled Erinton[7]

... NOT the daughter of Thomas Clinton (otherwise Fiennes), 3rd Earl of Lincoln. Again the immigration of someone so prominent would have been noted (6) as were the immigrations of two other daughters, Susan (7,8,9,10) and Arbella (7,8,10,11), and a son, Charles (8,10,12). Furthermore, Ann Clinton, dau. of Earl Thomas, is noted to have died young (13) as she is not mentioned in his will (7). He died in 1618 (7,13), well before Ann "Clinton" Harrington's reported arrival at Charlestown in 1631.

I have, so far found nothing to support that the following are their children

In fact, what evidence I have found argues against at least some of these allegations

To begin with, Y-DNA testing has proven that Robert and Benjamin are not only not brothers, but that they cannot have shared a common ancestor in genealogy time  So, at most, only one or the other of them could be James's son

Furthermore, Robert is a DNA match with a HARRINGTON who descends from William HARRINGTON of Essex.

Lastly, Abraham ERRINGTON is an ERRINGTON, descended from Edward ERRINGTON of Denton, Northumberland

I have found an entry on a UK site (findmypast.com) which has a document for a baptism for ROBERT HERINGTON, b 1616 in Southwold.

Ann Harrington

Lady Ann, born 1596, married Sir James Harrington and also emigrated to America, where she died in Charlestown, Mass., Christmas Day in 1632. She is not mentioned at all in her father's extensive will, in which he leaves all of his daughters money and even names servants, but the apparent family drama that resulted in this appears to be lost to history.

Notes: Was John or James who went to America in "Prosperous"? Was his wife Joan Jentilman or Anne Clinton? There is supporting evidence for both suppositions. Is possible that Joan Jentilman married both Robert and John Harrington, creating a confusion. American Genealogist V.20, 1944 p.46-47: "Family of Earl of Lincoln, the alledged Connection" states that "Ann Clinton died Young and is incorrectly stated to have married John Harrington". It also states that the family of the Earl of Lincoln left no known descendants here. "Robert Harrington of Watertown, MA." by Frederick Lewis Weis states that "There was a Robert Harrington Bap 1 Oct 1616, son of Robert who had married on 7 Mar 1613, Joan Jentilman (bap. 5 Jul 1603), daughter of William and Agnes Jentilman. Joan (Jentilman) Harrington m.2nd, 25 Jul 1622 to Rev. John Younges" This last marriages is also referred to in Torrey (p.846). Other says that John Harington, son of Sir John Harington and Mary Rogers, was born about 1584. He married Anne Clinton, daughter of the Earl of Lincoln, an influential Puritan who was very active in aiding that Sect in settling Boston after 1628. Anne was born in Newcastle, England, in 1596, one of a family of seventeen children. John and Anne came to Boston in 1630. He was drowned in the harbor soon after their arrival, leaving Anne a widow with four children, all of whom were born in England.

Note: Cemetery office confirmed that this burial is unmarked on 12 Jul 2013.
