With his father and others of his family he left Virginia and located in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Here in 1786, he purchased from his cousin, Henry Newkirk, a tract of land containing 413 acres, adjoining the town of Bentlyeyville, known as The Legacy, and this was the birthplace of all his children.

On March 28, 1816, he sold all his holdings in this tract and on April 15, 1917, purchased a farm of 110 acres on Brush Creek, Adams County, Ohio, a few miles west of Dunkinville, on which he continued to reside until his death Oct 65 1840.

He donated a church lot and burying ground on one corner of his land, which is now known as Hull Church, and with his wife, Margaret, he is here buried, as are some of his children and descendants.

He married first in 1785, Margaret Knox, who died July 8, 1823, and second Marcia Steward who survived him.
