About Aquilla Lane

DAR Ancestor #: A068550

There's no evidence that either he or his brother, Tidence, had the middle name "Van Bibber" or anything else, contrary to what Find a Grave and many family trees say. None of the primary source records list a middle name. He signed his will "Aquila Lane."

Aquilla Lane was born May 18, 1753 in Virginia, and died November 24, 1819 in Jefferson Co., Tennessee. He married (1) Unknown Epps. He married (2) Agnes Fitzgerald February 01, 1780, in Washington District, North Carolina. She was born January 18, 1763, in Washington County, Tennessee, and died 1822 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.

Aquilla Lane enlisted in 1779 as a private in Captain Russell's company, Colonel Christian's Virginia regiment, and in 1781 in Captain Anthony Belcher's Company, Colonel Israel Shelby's regiment. He participated in Shelby's campaign against the Chickamauga Indians in 1779 and was with the Overmountain men who accompanied Col. John Sevier to the Battle of King's Mountain. At the close of the Revolution, he received a grant of 240 acres of land from the state of North Carolina in that part of Greene County which was later formed into Jefferson County, Tennessee, on which he lived until the time of his death which occurred on 24 Nov 1819. He was appointed an Ensign, 4th regiment of Hawkins County on 23 November 1810. His will was made on 26 April 1816 and was probated on 13 May 1820 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.

Aquilla signed his will on 29 Apr 1816 in Jefferson County, Tennessee, and it was proved in March 1819, so he must have died between those dates. Agnes said he died on 24 November 1819 in her widow's pension application, but it wasn't submitted until 1845, so she must have been mistaken.
