Adam Mudie of Breckness

ADAM MUDIE OF BRECKNESS

Adam Mudie of Breckness is the son of William Mudie of Breckness. He is noticed as the eldest son of Master William Mudie of Breckness on 20 January 1564, in a charter issued by Robert Stewart, feuar of the crown lands of Orkney and Shetland. Robert Stewart's charter followed from a proposal of marriage between Grizel Stewart and Adam Mudie but the marriage does not appear to have taken place. Grizel Stewart was subsequently married to Hugh Sinclair of Strome, probably soon after 10 July 1577, and so it seems quite likely, probable even, that she and Adam Mudie were still minor children in 1564. The Parsonage of Walls and Flotta

James VI, King of Scots, presented Adam Mudie of Breckness to the parsonage of Walls and Flotta on 9 August 1577 Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, vii, pp. 254-55 In September 1592, acting as parson of Walls, and in the company of Adam Reid, Bishop of Orkney, and other members of the bishop's chapter, he witnessed a tack made in favour of Mr. Francis Bothwell. The Parsonage of Balista and Cross Kirk of Dunrossness in Shetland

Adam Mudie may have held the parsonage of Balista and Cross Kirk of Dunrossness in Shetland for a short time. According to the Reverend Doctor Hew Scott, he "had charge" here in 1580. Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, vii, p. 288

Melsetter

Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney, gave the three penny lands of Melsetter and a six merk land in Brims to Adam Mudie of Breckness, in exchange for the lands of Snelsetter. Orkney Rentals: pp. 140-42 Ibidem Art III: p. 30

Death

Adam Mudie of Breckness was alive on 28 February 1599 [National Records of Scotland, reference CS226] but he died before 10 January 1609. [National Records of Scotland, reference RD11] According to the Moodie Book he died in or before September 1603. The Moodie Book
