About Adrian Spurlock, the Cowboy Evangelist
John Adrian was called the Cowboy Evangelist.
He was born to John William and Eliza Jane Johnson Spurlock Aug 3 1886 in Jefferson Co. Iowa. He traveled with his family to Nebraska then to Colorado in early 1900. He married Sadie Tolliver from Missouri and they were in Colorado Springs during the 1910 census.
Sadie and Adrian had seven children: Clover (Harry Edward Hoffman), Lucille Francis (Ed Parsley), Genevieve Laura (Cook), Wanda J (Luther Martin Townley), Adrian Franklin, Paul Arthur (known as Arthur m Garnet Stone), and Esther R (James Cornelius Gaylor).
Adrian and his brothers were the musical Spurlocks, playing bluegrass fiddles, banjo, piano, guitar and bass. They wrote music and played for big name musicians as well as doing their own music. (A fiddle played by the 'boys' was smashed on stage as a prank by a young vocalist during one of their shows...this vocalist was Frank Sinatra.)
Adrian died Aug 9 1963 in San Diego, California and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.
