About Adriaen Hendrickse Aten, Sr

concerns

This Adriaen resembles his 1st cousin Adrian Hendrickse Aten. Are they supposed to be the same person? (What is mentioned in brief biography and family below seems to affirm that.) Further research is warranted.

brief biography and family

Uncertainty about which of Adriaen Hendrickse Aten’s two sons—Thomas or Hendrick—was the father of this Adrian has been under examination and discussion for over 100 years and is still being debated. Three Aten sons moved from Long Island to the Raritan valley of New Jersey in the early 1700’s: Thomas, Jan and Paul. Hendrick remained on Long Island.

“1. ADRIAN ATEN, of near Readington, N.J., b. probably about 1696; d. Dec. 10, 1757; m. about 1718, Jacobje Middagh (dau. of Dirck Middagh and Cathelyne Van Neste), who was b. Oct. 24, 1693, and d. in Northampton co., Pa., May 16, 1782. (This Adrian has been usually considered as the son of Thomas Aten (5 above), and so published, e.g., in the ‘N.Y. Gen & Biog. Rec.,’ Vol. 37, p. 26 ..."

Adrian’s baptism at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam is recorded thus: "1695 4 Sept Thomas Aten, Elsje Schilman; Adriaen; Adriaen Aten & his wife Elisabeth Thomas"

He married Jacobje Middagh about 1717-1718 and the first of their 10 children, Antje (Annetje) Aten, was born 25 August 1719. The births of their children were recorded by Jacobje in her “Testament and Psalms.”

The following is a verbatim copy of Adriaen Aten's family record, from the Testament and Psalms in the possession of the Rev. Dr. John B. Thompson, the grandson of his granddaughter, Elizabeth Morehead. No translation is attempted:
