Early life in Yorkshire/Lancashire

  • baptized in Tatham parish (Church of England)
  • childrens' births shown in the Bolland Meeting before leaving for Penn. colony
    • essentially, the Bolland Meeting was some mile south of the Bentham Meeting. Thomas was of the Bolland, Agnes was of the Bentham. However, most groups of Quakers met in pvt. homes as the meeting houses of later years were yet to be built.
  • hundreds of Quaker from these communities were being sent to jail during the mid-to-late 1600s including those of Bentham, Settle, and Bolland.

" Among the earliest settlers who came with children were: Nicholas and Jane Walne, three, Thomas and Agnes Croasdale, six, Robert and Elizabeth Hall, two, James and Ann Dilworth, one, William and Mary Paxson, one, James and Jane Paxson, two; James and Mary Radcliff, four, Jonathan and Anne Scaife, two, Robert and Alice Heaton, five, Martin and Anne Wildman, with six children. John Eastburn came from the parish of Bingley, county of York, with a certificate from Bradley meeting, dated July 31st, 1684. Johannes Searl was in Middletown prior to 1725, from whose house a road leading to Bristol was laid out that year. Before 1700 Thoms Musgrove owned 500 acres in the township, patented to Hannah Price, and afterward came into the possession of Thomas Jenks."

'Tethem' parish in Yorkshire is more commonly known as Tatham parish (pronounced TATE-ham), an area along the Yorkshire/Lancashire border where there was heavy prosecution of Quakers during the second half of the 17th century. Many of theseQuaker families subsequently left this area for Pennsylvania... see <PROJECT>

Biography

The marriage of Thomas Croasdale and Agnes Hathernthwaite of Wyersidd on 3 mo. 1, 1664, (ie. 1 May 1664) was recorded by the Lancaster (England) Monthly Meeting of Friends.<ref name="Potts">Potts, Thomas Maxwell.
Our Family Ancestors. Canonsburg, Pa.: T.M. Potts, 1895</ref> The couple lived at New Hay, Yorkshire, England, and were part of the Settle Monthly Meeting.<ref name="Potts" />21/22 April 1682 Thomas Croasdale, of New Hay, yeoman, received a 1000acre land grant in Pennsylvania. Shortly thereafter, Thomas, Agness and six children and other families from the Settle Meeting were given certificates to leave,<ref name="Potts" /> which they did July 1682, on the "Lamb" part of William Penn's fleet that settled Pennsylvania. <ref>[http://www.haygenealogy.com/hay/quaker/Quaker-ships.html haygenealogy list of Penn's Fleet</ref> They settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on 500 acres, on NeshaminyCreek. "In the yeare 1667 in ye 11th month on ye 5th day thereof Agnes the wife of Thomas Croasdale of Nowah (sic) bore him a daughter and had called her name Elizabeth"

This date is therefore January 5, 1668 using modern calendar conventions
