Notes

  • The Fines possibly were French Hugenots. It is possible that Agnes Merchant was also French with the accent on the last syllable. (http://thompsonoden.familytreeguide.com/getperson.php?personID=I433...)
  • Does anyone know of another marraige of Agnes Merchant other than the one to Thomas Fine. She was supposedly married to a Lovelady also. (http://genforum.genealogy.com/merchant/messages/627.html)
  • If this gives any clues to help, I have a line that is mixed in with Merchants and Fines. I am descended from Jacob Stewart and Rebecca Mellick from Morris Co., NJ. Rebecca (born in the area of Phillipsburg)had a sister, Catharine Mellick who married a John Fine. John Fine's father was a Philip Fine, b. 1744, who in 1767 resided at Barker tract in Alexandria Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ. (This comes from "A Story of an Old Farmhouse" by Andrew Mellick). Jacob and Rebecca Stewart had a daughter - Catherine Stewart who married an Ahaz Merchant in Randolph Twp, Morris County. He was supposedly born in CT in 1794. I don't know how he ended up in NJ. Believe he died in Ohio. (http://genforum.genealogy.com/merchant/messages/67.html)
