Biography

After they married, Ernest and Elizabeth became missionaries along the Whanganui River, where they lived in a tent. Ernest wrote about this for the Salvation Army newspaper, in an article called "Incidents in the Life of A.E.A. Death notice: "The death has occurred of Brigadier Ernest Holdaway, of the Salvation Army, youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs John Holdaway, amongst the earliest settlers in Richmond., At the age of 20 he left his home for Christchurch. and became a Cadet in the Salvation Army. For 14 years he was stationed in various parts of New Zealand, and did much strenuous work. During that .time he took, a party of Maoris to England to take part in one of the Crystal Palace meetings of the Army. He afterwards removed to Australia, where with the rank of' Major, he filled important offfices at Broken Hill, Adelaide, Melbourne, etc. For three years he was in charge of the junior work of the Armyin the North Island of New Zealand. His last station was Launceston, where he was in charge of the Army work in Tasmania. He leaves a widow, four daughters, and three sons to mourn his loss."<ref> Nelson Evening Mail, Volume XLVIII, 22 September 1913, Page 4 </ref>
