Phoebe was born in Nelson on the 17 December 1857 to John Holdaway andAmelia Eyles. <ref>New Zealand Births Deaths and Marriages, https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/, accessed 17 August 2021, Birth registration 1858/6368 for Not Recorded, mother Amelia, father John </ref> Although she is not named in the New Zealand Birth Registration Index, the December 1857 date is the most likely for a death at the ageof 81. The second child, Reginald, only lived for a few months. An obituary was published in the Manawatu Standard...:The death has occurred at Waitara of Mrs Budden, widow of the late Mr Benjamin Budden, one of the pioneer settiers in the Honikiwi (Otorohanga) district, at the age of 80 years, Mrs Budden was born at Nelson, the child of settlers who came from England in 1842. After her marriage she accom- panied her husband first to Masterton, then on to theForty Mile Bush to Mangamahoe and then to Pahiatua, where they resided for 13 years. Then they went to the Auckland province, and Mr Buddenacquired a big block of unimproved country at Honikiwi. They resided there for 25 years, and removed to Waitara to live in retirement. Mr Budden died nearly six years ago. Mrs Budden, who is survived by an adult family of fours sons and four daughters, was a fine type of pioneerand was respected and admired for her never-failing kindliness. Phoebe had signed her last will and testament on the 12 April 1935.
