Brief overview:

Alta (61), was found by her husband Louis (66) lying over the side of their bath in the bathroom of their home. She was apparently strangled by an intruder who left her house with only a decoder. "At first I thought she'd had a heart attack or stroke. She did have high blood pressure. When I picked her up she was blue and ice cold," said Van Staden on Monday.

Van Staden called his daughter, Marinda, who sent emergency services to the house. Netcare 911 emergency workers arrived shortly afterwards and one of them told Van Staden to call the police as he suspected his wife had been murdered. Van Staden went to his farm near Hammanskraal on Saturday morning, leaving his wife home alone. She let her husband know that she had a problem with her car and had called a mechanic to replace the battery.

The man arrived at the house minutes after he'd spoken to Mrs Van Staden. A man he met at the gate told the mechanic she wasn't at home. He let Van Staden know that he hadn't replaced the battery before leaving. Van Staden arrived home about 16:45. The front door was unlocked and he was under the impression his wife was busy somewhere in the house.

The bathroom door was slightly open and Van Staden found his wife, to whom he'd been married for 40 years, in the bathroom. "My wife was so fragile. He could've knocked her over and she wouldn't have been able to do anything.
