REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERAN:

ALEXANDER CATLIN (Captain, Connecticut Militia) was a member of the County of Litchfield Committee of Safety (provisional government), and involved with the movement of clothing supplies for the Continental Army. He went on, after the war, to become a notable merchant in the China trade importing its fine exotic goods to the Litchfield area. His house, built 1778, exists today, in Litchfield, Connecticut, as a private home, and is opened once a year to the touring public during the second Saturday of July.

Circa 1800 or after, Alexander removed to Burlington Vermont to join with his two sons, Moses and Guy, who ventured to begin an enterprise of their own there, where they served as agents for other merchants trading along the Champlain-Richelieu route connecting New York and Montreal. Active in the timber trade that dominated the Champlain valley economy, they assembled large lumber rafts destined for Canada, Where they exchanged lumber for cash and goods. This eventually led to their organization of the Lake Champlain Steamboat Company. Alexander died in this area and was buried at the Elmwood cemetery in Burlington where his son Moses, Lucinda, and other Catlin family members also lie at a family plot there.
