The 20th laird was educated at Aberdeen University and proceed to Edinburgh to study law. He was called to the bar as an advocate in 1843. Alexander was appointed Principal Clerk tot eh Court of Judiciary in 1867 and held this office until 1874 when he was appointed to Sheriff of Argyll until he resigned in 1891. Page 56, Wimberley.
The 19th laird having succeeded to the estates of Schivas, in light of his mother, assumed the name of Forbes before Irvine. Page 55, Wimberley.

Alexander took a large share in the county work of Aberdeenshire for which he was a JP, Deputy Lieutenant and held the Office of Convener from 1862 to 1890 when County Councils were established through the Local Government Act. His services were recognised by the presentation of a portrait painted by Sir George Reid in 1891. Page 57, Wimberley.

Alexander Forbes Irvine, 20th Laird of Drum FRSE JP DL LLD (1818-1892) was a Scottish landowner, advocate, philosopher and amateur astronomer. He was a prominent member of Clan Irvine and held the family seat of Drum Castle until his death.[1]

Alexander Forbes Irvine, 20th of Drum was born on 18 February 1818.1 He was the son of Alexander Forbes Irvine, 19th of Drum and Margaret Hamilton.2 He married Anna Margaretta Forbes, daughter of Lt.-Col. Jonathan Leslie of Rothie Norman and Margaret Urquhart, on 19 December 1848 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1,3 He died on 4 April 1892 at age 74.1

A genealogical survey of the peerage of Britain as well as the royal families of Europe

20-Alexander Forbes-Irvine (1818-1892) became the 20th Laird of Drum when his father died. He was educated at Aberdeen University, and on graduation studied law in Edinburgh. He was called to the Scottish bar as an advocate in 1843. He was appointed Principal Clerk to the Court of Justiciary in 1867, and held that office until 1874, when he received the appointment of Sheriff of Argyll, which he only resigned in 1891.

Alexander married Margaret Anna Forbes-Leslie, daughter of Jonathon Forbes-Leslie.

He was also Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Advocates from 1886, and for many years a Director of the Highland Agricultural Society; Chancellor of the Diocese of Brechin from 1858 until his death; Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and Vice-President, and received the degree of LL. D., Edinburgh, in 1887.

He also prepared several volumes of Irvine’s Reports of cases before the High Court and Circuit Courts of Justiciary and was the author of A Treatise on the Game Laws, which has long been a standard work, and of which three editions have been published.

He took a large share in the county work of Aberdeenshire, in which he was a Justice of the Peace, and Deputy Lieutenant; and held the important office of Convener of the County from 1862 until 1890, when County Councils were established under the Local Government Act (Scotland).
