Alexander Gilliland is listed in Virginia Records of Revolutionary soldiers as in Capt. Barbour's Company of militia in 1776 and later. Date of his will, 09/18/1795. Record in 4th vol. Sprague's America Pulpit pp144-145, and D.A.R. record No. 102854.

Alexander appeared to be a real character and apparently was very wealthy. He was married several times. One of sons, James, became a Presbyterian minister who was anti-slavery and anti-drinking and had to baptize Alexander on his death bed.

The following is from Fannie Huggins Pettijohn's (his granddaughter 1888 Family History:

"I think grandfather was pretty well off for he had a farm of his own and he bot a colored woman. She had come from Affrica when a little girl & never liked white folks...she never liked to do house work. Would rather work in the field. My grandfather and mother had seven children. James, Elizabeth, John, Frances, Robert, William & Mary. when my mother was a small girl her grandfather died and her grandmother came to live at grandfathers. she brot Jean & two or three children with her. Old Gilly went to live with Mothers uncle Adam Baird." Grandfather remained a widower for about a year, then married a widow with 3 children, 2 boys and a girl. the stepmother then had two Gilliland children, Thomas and Alexander."

According to Vol. 6, Misc. Family Records, William Gaston Chapter DAR 1956, The Olney Presbyterian Church was established in Gaston County, North Carolina in 1795 on York Road. the earliest grave in the cemetery is "In memory of Alexander Gilliland who departed this life Oct. 17, 1795, age 59. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

In the name of God Amen. This Eighteenth day of September in the year of our Lord 1795, I Alexander Gilliland of the State of North Carolina and County of Lincoln being frail of body but of sound memery thanks be to God for the same and calling to mind the mortality of my body and that it is appointed to all persons once to die I do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the first place I Recommend my soul to God Who gave it and my body to the earth to be buried with decent buriel at the discration of my executors hereafter named and tuching Such worldly goods as it hath pleased God to bestor upon me I give and bequeth as followeth: Impremis I give and Bequeth Unto My Beloved Wife Rebaca Gilleland one Mare Nimed Snip + to My son James Gilleland one Crown. I Bequeth unto My datter Elesebeth Silson Eight Dolers. I Bequeth unto My Son John the Duck Colt Likwise I Life to him the End of My plantation Joining to John Dinwoode Beging upon the hill over the Brench frome the South Doar and the Corse acrose Bothe Sirvays of the End Lines Nixt to Jon. Dinwody. I Beque6th unto my Datter Frances Gilleland the pigen Mear and a good Bed and furenter I Bequith to my Son Robart Gilleland two H8undred Eakers of Land lying in Comberland and Likewise one horse Nemed Shandey. I Bequeth unto My son William Gilleland one Hundred Eakers of Land over falls Brench one Horse called foley I Bequeth Unto My Dotter Marey Gilleland one horse nemed Tojer one Bed and furenter I Bequeth unto My Stepson Samuall McColleth one Colt Called Dick + All the Remndr of My Estate at the Disposing of my Ecetors amoungst the family.
