Alexander, second Earl of Leven, married Lady Margaret Howard, daughter of the Earl of Carlisle, and had issue--

  • I. Lady Margaret, who succeeded as third Countess of Leven.
  • II. Lady Catherine, who succeeded as fourth Countess of Leven.

Alexander, second Earl of Leven, executed an entail of his estates, 13th February 1663, and made a resignation of his honours and estates in favour of himself and the heirs-male of his body, with remainder to the eldest heirs-female of his body, or of the bodies of his heirs-male, without division, provided that the said heir-female should marry a gentleman of the name of Leslie, or one that should assume the name of Leslie; whom failing, to the second son of John, seventh Earl, afterwards Duke of Rothes, and the heirs-male of his body; whom failing, to the second son of George, Earl of Melville, and Lady Catherine Leslie, his spouse, daughter of Alexander, Lord Balgonie, and to the heirs-male of the body of the said second son; whom failing, to the second son of David, second Earl of Wemyss, and Lady Margaret Leslie, daughter of John, sixth Earl of Rothes, and relict of Alexander, Lord Balgonie, and of Francis, Earl of Buccleuch, and the heirs-male of the body of the said second son; whom failing, to the heirs-male whomsoever of the said Earl of Leven, the entailer; whom failing, to his heirs and assigns whomsoever.

Alexander, second Earl of Leven, died 15th July 1664, and having no male issue, was succeeded by his elder daughter"

Alexander Leslie, 2nd Earl of Leven was born circa 1637.[1] He was the son of Alexander Leslie, Lord Balgonie and Lady Margaret Leslie.[1]

He married Margaret Howard, daughter of Sir William Howard and Mary Eure, on 30 December 1656.[1]

He died on 15 July 1664, without male issue.[1]

He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Leven [S., 1641] on 4 April 1661.[1] He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Balgonie [S., 1641] on 4 April 1661.[1]

On 12 February 1663 he obtained a regrant of his Earldom, with special remainder to all heirs male, then heirs female of his body, then John, Earl of Rothe's second son, then his sister, Catherine's second son, then the second of his mother ! [1]
