Alfred Adolph Logan was born on December 22 1850 in Vik in Orland parish (now municipality), Trondelag county, Norway. He was the son of Knud Laugen and Karen Sofie Laugen nee Andersdatter Hoöya. Adolph was baptised on March 2 1851 in the church of Orland.

Adolph (Knudsen) Laugen moved away from Orland parish to Laugen in Naeroy parish with his parents and siblings in the year of 1864.

In 1865, during the census of 1865 for the parish of Naeroy, they lived in the rural residence of Sommarbakken (Literal English translation: Summer Hill) in the 1st census district of Naeroy parish. Adolph's father, Knud, was a tentant farmer (Nor.: Husmann med jord) and carpenter. At that time they went by the last name of Grudt.

Knud Olsen Laugen and his wife Karen Sofie Andersdatter together with their children Adolph; Ole Andreas; Hanna Oline; Kristiane Henriette; Claudia Sofie, and Margrethe Kristine moved away from Naeroy on May 8 1871, and emigrated to the United States of America.
