Claudia Sophie Laugen was born on March 24,1860, in Nærøy, Nord-Trøndelag county, Norway. She was the daughter of Knud Olsen Laugen and Karen Sofie Laugen. Claudia Sophie was christened November 4, 1860, in Nærøy parish, Nord-Trøndelag county, Norway Her godparents were: Elias Elaissen Laugen; Ole Lillehval or Lellehval; Andreas Fhovland or Thovland; Dorthea Fhovland or Thovland; Anne Laugen, and Karen Lillehval or Lellehval.

Claudia Sophie Laugen's family lived in the rural residence of Sommarbakken in the 1st district in Naeroy. She was the youngest out of the four siblings. Her father was a tenant farmer (Nor.: Husmann med jord) and carpenter. Their family name was Grudt.
