About Alice Brewer

Parents: unknown

Spouse: George G. Brewer, Sr.

Children: Burwell Brewer (b. 1730)

Notes

Alice (perhaps Burwell) was the second wife of George Brewer, of Brunswick County (b. circa 1675, d. between 5 March 1742 and 2 August 1744). His first wife was Sarah Lanier. Alice was alive on 26 June 1750 in Brunswick County, Virginia, when the inventory of George Brewer (deceased) estate was demanded or her and step son George Brewer, Jr. to be completed.

George Brewer named ten children in his [1741] will, but which of his two wives were mother to each is not certain. The birth order of his children is also not known and there is no evidence in his will that they were mentioned in order by their ages. It is likely that the older sons George (b. by 1707), John, Howell and William (likely at least age 16 by 1736), sons Lanier and Nicholas (names associated with the Lanier Family) and daughter Sarah (married by 1741) were children of George Brewer's first wife, Sarah Lanier. The will also mentions "all my younger children that it hath praised God to give me by her (his wife Asice) during her life..." I suspect, although it is not certain, that the "younger children" (children of second wife Alice) are the sons Oliver, Henry and Nathaniel, each of who received land (the older sons did not receive land and were certainly already established with property). Henry, Nathaniel and Oliver each also received a gun (the older, independent sons would have already owned their own gun).22

Broyhill adds three additional sons, Burwell, Joseph and Boyce, which he claims are the sons of Alice. He very briefly follows up with the three on page 121. Although all three names appear in at least one record in the area of Brunswick County, there is no record, or evidence, that would allow us to place them in the family of George Brewer. None of the three are named in George Brewer's will.

The date of her birth is not known, but it appears that she had three children (perhaps more) born probably in the decade of the 1720s and perhaps in the decade of the 1730s, or both. She outlived her husband, and was certainly younger than him, perhaps by one or two decades. Hereinafter cited as Brewer Families of Colonial Virginia.
