Origins of the Surnames Wylie, Wyllie, Wily, and Wiley, etc. (Soundex W400).

wi-ly () adj: marked by skill in deception; "a foxy scheme"; "sly as a fox". From wi-le () .] A trick or stratagem practiced for ensnaring or deception; a sly, insidious; artifice; a beguilement; an allurement. [Middle English wil, from Old North French, from Old Norse vl, trick, or of Low German origin.] There are many ways to spell the surnames pronounced as the words wi-le and wi-ly above but, no matter how it's spelled, there can be little doubt as to the origin of the name. The word comes to us from Old Norse spoken in Britton and Scotland in the 9th and 10th centuries A.D. and was used to describe the little red dog-like animal known today as the fox. In the 10th and 11th centuries, the word is found in Middle English and again used to describe the fox. In the 13th century, the word "wile" or "wyle" means "crafty or sly, like a fox". There is no doubt that the word meant a fox or to be like a fox.

Nithsdale, from a height near Dalswinton The first time it appears as a surname is in 1355 Scotland when Donald Wyle of Dalswinton registered his lands in Nithsdale, on the River Nith. Dalswinton was a town in the area and lies between the present day towns of Thornhill and Dumfries in Dumfriesshire in the Galloway District of the Southern Uplands of Scotland.

On August 4, 1376, the same Donald was granted Ensigns Amorial at Dumfries Abbey as "DONALD OF DALSWINTON - WYLIE OF THAT ILK". The principal charge of Donald's Arms was a fox and all Arms granted since to Wylies in Scotland have born either a walking or running fox.

Over the next few years Wylies of various spellings, presumably descendants of Donald, appear all over Scotland and Northern England. Thomas Wyly is listed in the 1379 Yorkshire Poll Tax, John Wili is in Montrose in 1434, William Wyly appears in Ayrshire a few years later and Richard Wyly was Vicar of St. Mary's Dundee in the 1450's. The Wylies spread throughout England and Ireland for the next 200 years and then began their incredible journey to the new worlds.

Many of the Wylies in England used the spelling Wyllie and Wyley, while the Irish Wylies preferred Wiley. It is important to note that names were spelled differently every time a marriage, will or deed was recorded. Sometimes the families changed their names just to "fit in". Some Wylies changed their spellings to Wiley and some Wileys changed to Wylie after immigrating to America. I've found branches of my own family using Wily, Wiley, Willey, and Wylie between 1788 and 1920.

I meant to respond to you, Nancy, but I was sidetracked, so here is some information about the Wileys, Hagers and Martins and Germanna:

I have a Wiley connection on my Holtzclaw line, Eve Holtzclaw, the youngest daughter of Jacob Holtzclaw and his second wife, Catherine. According to BC Holtzclaw, she was born around 1741 and she married Allen Wiley. Allen Wiley was born in 1735, d. 1812 in Culpeper Co., VA and he was the son of David and Jane Wiley of Orange Co., VA. Allen Wiley served in the French and Indian War and "was a prominent early Baptist minister in Virginia, serving churches in Orange, Stafford, Frederick and Culpeper Cos. A full account of his life is given in "The Virginia Baptist Register", No. 1, 1962, published by the Virginia Baptist Historical Society."

David and Jane Wiley had the following children: Moses Wiley Allen Wiley, Jr. Lydia Wiley And, possibly: William Wiley John Wiley Julianna Wiley Nancy Wiley Mary Wiley Elizabeth Wiley

As for Hager, there is most definitely a Haeger/Hager connection to Germanna--Rev Johann Henrich Haeger, John Henry Hager, was the minister for the 1714 Colony. He was living in Oberfischbach at the time of emigration and my ancestors, Hans Jacob Holtzclaw and his first wife, Anna Margreth Otterbach, were also living in Oberfischbach, Jacob being the schoolmaster there at that time. There is a lot of information about the Haegers and the Friesenhagens, his wife, Elizabeth's, family.

And, the Martin family, a family that I am very familiar with! This family was part of the 1714 Colony from the village of Muesen. Johann Jost Merten/Martin was born in 1691 in Muesen, a village not far from Oberfischbach. He was married to Maria Catharina Otterbach, the sister of my ancestress, Anna Margreth Otterbach. The Martin house is the only standing home of any of the First Colonists, still standing today in what would be the German Town tract, just outside of Warrenton and close to Crockett Park/Lake. There is a lot of documentation about the Martin family in several books written by BC Holtzclaw.

Let me know how you might connect to these families and let's see what we can do. I'd be more than happy to help you!

Hi, I have just a couple of questions about the possibility of lines connecting to the Germanna surnames.

1 st family: I have a family found in KY with a PA connection.

Jenny Sellards, the daughter of Hezekiah Sellards,(who was b. in PA) was born in 1760 and married Thomas Wiley in 1779. Hailing from Northern Ireland and traveling with a group from Strausburg, Virginia, he and his brother settled near the Sellards in 1777.

I know this family would not have been Germanna, but there is one story that notes that Thomas Wiley was with the Germanna Colony for a bit before

moving on. I have found no other mention of this, except for this one, Is there any record of a Wiley family found in connection with Germanna?

2nd family: I found one mention the these earliest Martins might have been

in the Germanna area. Were there any connections between the Germanna families and the Martin families who end in WV? Descendants of John Martin
