Has anyone seen the family cemetery of Allen Wiley and Eve Holtzclaw? Eve was the daughter of Hans Jacob Holtzclaw and his second wife, Catherine. It is said to be just off US 522 south of the unincorporated town of Flint Hill. At the time of his death, this was still part of Culpeper County. Today it would be located in Rappahannock County. Suzanne Collins Matson following is also by Suzanne Collins Matson: 22 August 1757 Jacob Holtzclaw made the following gift to his unmarried daughter Eve Holtzclaw:

This is to give Notice to all Persons & that I Jacob Holtzclaw made over & Promise to Give my Daughter Eve Holtzclaw Ten Pounds Curr[en]t Money & a Negro Girl named Cate for her Service She did for her Mother on her Death bed & to her Death, which I Say She is to have besides her Share She is to have in the Remainder of my Estate which Ten Pounds & Negro Girl [illegible] to my Daughter after my Death, Witness my hand this Twenty Second Day of August in the Year of our Lord 1757. Jacob Holtzclaw Done in the Presence of I. C. Philip Fangemunden [sic] Peter Hitt Jacob Spilman Joseph Taylor

In the deposition of Peter Hitt aged about 80 years he stated that he heard Jacob Holtzclaw say that he would give his daughter Eve Holtzclaw a Negro girl and when Jacob Holtzclaw said that he "appeared to be very much in Liquor and believes that he did not know any thing he said or did". Peter Hitt further stated that he heard no mention of any money. Peter Hitt signed with his mark "PH".

In his deposition Joseph Taylor aged about 40 years stated that he heard Jacob Holtzclaw say that he would give his daughter Eve Holtzclaw a Negro girl and "that he believes the said Jacob Holtzclaw was so much in Liquor at the same time that he did not know what he said or did". Further he heard no mention of money. Joseph Taylor signed with an "x".

William Kierne [not listed as a witness] aged about 50 years gave his deposition that he heard Jacob Holtzclaw say that the Parson had come to see him and the Parson wanted Jacob Holtzclaw to give his daughter Eve Holtzclaw ten pounds along with the Negro girl for taking care of her mother while sick. William Kierne signed his name "W Kierne".

All of the above depositions were taken 27 September 1764 by W. Blackwell and Jos. Hudnall and returned to the court.

Catharine [maiden name unknown], second wife of Jacob Holtzclaw is usually reported as dying between 1754 and 1759. Based on the statement by Jacob Holtzclaw we now know she died before 22 August 1757.

Eve, the daughter of Jacob Holtzclaw, is referred to by her maiden name in the statement of her father and in the depositions. The statement of her father written in 1757 and the depositions taken in 1764 may indicate that she married after 1764. Her marriage to Allen Wiley has been reported as about 1758 in other sources.

The approximate birth dates of the deponents can be determined from their depositions. Peter Hitt's age was given as about 80 years, thus a birth year of about 1684. Joseph Taylor's age was given as about 40 years so he would have been born about 1724.

Is there a family connection between Joseph Thomas and Jacob Holtzclaw? Johannes/John Holtzclaw, eldest son of Jacob Holtzclaw, married a widow, Catherine Russell Thomas. The two youngest sons of Jacob Holtzclaw, Joseph and Jacob, married Thomas sisters. Are all of these Thomases members of the same family group? At present, little research has been done on the connections between these Thomases and also little research has been done on the possible connections between the Thomas family and the Holtzclaw family. I meant to respond to you, Nancy, but I was sidetracked, so here is some information about the Wileys, Hagers and Martins and Germanna:

I have a Wiley connection in my Holtzclaw line, Eve Holtzclaw, the youngest daughter of Jacob Holtzclaw and his second wife, Catherine. According to BC Holtzclaw she was born around 1741 and she married Allen Wiley. Allen Wiley was born in 1735, d. 1812 in Culpeper Co., VA and he was the son of David and Jane Wiley of Orange Co., VA. Allen Wiley served in the French and Indian War and "was a prominent early Baptist minister in Virginia, serving churches in Orange, Stafford, Frederick and Culpeper Cos. A full account of his life is given in "The Virginia Baptist Register", No. 1, 1962, published by the Virginia Baptist Historical Society."

David and Jane Wiley had the following children: Moses Wiley Allen Wiley, Jr. Lydia Wiley And, possibly: William Wiley John Wiley Julianna Wiley Nancy Wiley Mary Wiley Elizabeth Wiley

As for Hager, there is most definitely a Haeger/Hager connection to Germanna--Rev Johann Henrich Haeger, John Henry Hager, was the minister for the 1714 Colony. He was living in Oberfischbach at the time of emigration and my ancestors, Hans Jacob Holtzclaw and his first wife, Anna Margreth Otterbach, were also living in Oberfischbach, Jacob being the schoolmaster there at that time. There is a lot of information about the Haegers and the Friesenhagens, his wife, Elizabeth's, family.

And, the Martin family, a family that I am very familiar with! This family was part of the 1714 Colony from the village of Muesen. Johann Jost Merten/Martin was born in 1691 in Muesen, a village not far from Oberfischbach. He was married to Maria Catharina Otterbach, the sister of my ancestress, Anna Margreth Otterbach. The Martin house is the only standing home of any of the First Colonists, still standing today in what would be the German Town tract, just outside of Warrenton and close to Crockett Park/Lake. There is a lot of documentation about the Martin family in several books written by BC Holtzclaw.

Let me know how you might connect to these families and let's see what we can do. I'd be more than happy to help you!
