About Amanda Irene Moffitt

Amanda Irene Moffitt, 76, widow of the late H.B. Moffitt, died shortly before midnight Wednesday at the Eggen nursing home in Casey, Iowa. Mrs. Moffitt suffered a paralytic stroke two years ago and had been an invalid since. She suffered a stroke Monday of last week and remained in a coma until her death.

Mrs. Moffitt was bom October 14, 1869 in Johnson County, Iowa, a daughter of P.C. and Susannah Gustin. Most of her early life was spent near Adair. She and John 0. Shobert were united in marriage on October 22. 1888, and to this union were bom two sons, Roy Blaine and John Oliver Shobert. Her [ first ] husband passed away November 22,1900.

Mrs. Moffitt then went to Iowa City to work, and while there met and married Harmon B. Moffitt on July 3, 1901, and to this union was born one son, Bruce Gilbert. They spent most of their married life in Adair. Mr. Moffitt, who died last October 30tb, [ 1945 ] at the age of 93, came from Ohio by ox team with his parents in 1852. The Adair Mosonic lodge presented him with a 50 year membership certificate on his 93d birthday.

Mrs. Moffitt was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Pythian Sisters and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include three sons, Roy Blaine Shobert of Riddle, Oregon; John Oliver Shobert and Bruce Gilbert Moffitt of Adair, Iowa; one step daughter Mrs. Alma Otto, and one step son Jesse Moffitt both of Iowa City, Iowa; two brothers, Vem Gustin of Guthrie Center, Iowa and Bert Gustin of Hobson, Montana; one sister, Mrs. Sadie Belle James of Adair. There are also 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral services included Mr. and Mrs. Art Sheeder, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Gustin, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Gustin, Mrs. Ina Gustin and daughter, Delmar Gustin, Vern Gustin, Mrs. Clarence James, and Mr. and Mrs. James Butee, all of Guthrie Center, Iowa; Mrs. Lee Kirkpatrick and Mrs. Byron Christian of Atlantic, Iowa; Ethel Patterson and Frank and Charles Patterson of Greenfield, Iowa.
