Ambassador to New Zealand Scott Philip Brown

Scott P. Brown is a Republican who won the Massachusetts Senate Special Election for the Massachusetts Senate seat left vacant by the death of Ted Kennedy. Brown also holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Massachusetts National Guard, where he serves in the Judge Advocate General Corps.

Brown's opponent in the Massachusetts Senate special election was Martha Coakley, the current Massachusetts Attorney General. Brown caught up to Coakley during the last week of the campaign. On January 10 a Boston Globe poll had Coakley with a 15 point lead on January 10. Brown won the election with 52% of the vote, including winning Ted Kennedy's precinct in Hyannis.

Brown was born on September 12, 1959 in Kittery, Maine and grew up in Wakefield, Massachusetts. He often spent his summers in Newburyport, Massachusetts, where his father served as a city councilor for 18 years. Brown's father, C. Bruce Brown, and mother, Judith, divorced when he was about a year old.

Brown had a difficult childhood; after her divorce his working mother received welfare benefits. Brown experienced sexual abuse from a camp counselor, Brown revealed in his 2011 memoir. The counselor threatened to kill the ten-year-old boy if he disclosed the attack, and physical abuse from his stepfathers.
