Our heart was made sad when word came Monday that another good neighbor, friend and girlhood schoolmate had passed away.

Amos ASHCRAFT, the eldest of a large family born to Martin and Margaret (ALLEN) ASHCRAFT, near Dresden, Greene County, Indiana, October 10, 1860, died at the home of his birthplace June 17, 1946, aged 85 years, eight months seven days.

He was united in marriage to Anna B. BRUCE January 18, 1880. To this devoted couple 15 children were born, namely: Alvin (deceased); Jesse, Koleen, Indiana; Roy, Doans, Indiana; Doran, Koleen, Indiana; Bloomer, Kokomo, Indiana; Amos, Kokomo; Mrs. Iva CORBIN, Doans, Indiana; Mrs. Mina REED, Wapakoneta, Ohio; Mrs. Lala KING, Dugger; Mrs. Bessie BOLING, Scotland, Indiana; Mrs. Rella BOUGH, Loveland, Ohio; Mrs. Kelsie REED (deceased); Mrs. Rachel BOUGH, who for several years had lived with her father. Two died in infancy.

The above named remained under the parental roof until married and established homes of their own. But they often returned to gladden the hearts of “Pa and Ma,” who always had a warm welcome.

As a husband and father, he was devoted and kind to his family, giving good advice and admonishing them to be honest and treat people as they wished to be treated. His children, children-in-law, and grandchildren received the same kind treatment, and whether few or many came, they were met with the same warm welcome, and affectionately it was “Pa” from the least to the largest. During his sickness some of his children were continually at his side, doing everything possible to relieve his suffering, and as he would regret having to be a burden to them, they assured him they were trying to repay him for what he had done for them.

Everything that kind hearts and willing hands could do to relieve him of his suffering was to no avail. His suffering caused by cancer of the stomach was borne without a murmur of complaint, and he often expressed his desire for the end to come.

Mr. ASHCRAFT was a conscientous, upright man, highly respected for his honesty in his dealings and his neighbors and friends. In conversation with him the day before his passing, he said, “I have always tried to do unto others as I would have them do unto me.” Mr. ASHCRAFT was always ready and wiling to lend a helping hand to those in need, and when called upon to help in a worthy cause, he never refused, but cheerfully contributed. He was a staunch Democrat and served the people of Jackson Township efficiently two terms as trustee.

Mr. ASHCRAFT spent his entire life in Jackson Township, the greater part spent on his farm a few miles south of Koleen, where he reared his large family.

In later years he became owner of the home of his birthplace, and remained there until his death. He leaves to mourn the loss of an affectionate father, the above name children, 56 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Mary DYE, of Mitchell, Indiana; Mrs. Laura RECORDS, living among her children, and one brother, Jess ASHCRAFT, near Koleen and many fiends who will sadly miss him.

Followed by a large procession of sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends, his remains were taken Wednesday to Ashcraft Chapel, where funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. J. L. HATFIELD, and his body laid to rest in the Chapel Cemetery by the side of his companion.
